This week’s battle mage secrets on the Reverse Speed Ruleset.

The Reverse Speed ruleset flips the script whereby instead of faster units attacking first, it's the slower ones that get the advantage. This means that units with lower speeds will attack before units with higher speeds. Additionally, the Reverse Speed ruleset also impacts accuracy. Normally, faster units have better attack accuracy, but in this ruleset, that relationship is reversed. Slower units will have improved accuracy, making them more effective in landing hits. Some approaches I have found useful:

  • While slower units take precedence in this ruleset, it doesn't mean you should use the slowest units exclusively. A balanced approach that combines slower units with certain fast or medium-speed units can be effective.
  • Magic attackers, regardless of their speed, can deal consistent damage.
  • Each card should be chosen based on its strengths and abilities rather than relying on a specific speed strategy.
  • Debuffs, such as reducing armor, reducing range, and magic damage become important in battle.
  • Cards with a Slow ability, may benefit your opposition by reducing their speed, so don’t use it.

Did your strategy work? What will you try differently next time?

If this battle had to be played out numerous times with different opposition, I am almost guaranteed to lose every time. There were some monsters played in the battle that I wouldn’t have played, i.e. Ruler of the Seas which applies a +1 speed buff to all friendly monsters which is completely nonsensical in the context of the Reverse Speed battle. This is due to the restrictive ruleset in Even Stevens and therefore had to play what was available to me. Also, I came up against an opposition who probably had the same issue that I had as was demonstrated by their eclectic mix of different leveled monsters. Nonetheless, I didn’t have enough firepower and my opposition overpowered me with Queen Mycelia and Goblin Psychic.

Do You Like the Reverse Speed Ruleset? Why or Why Not?

I like the Reverse Speed ruleset as it allows utilizing cards that don’t often get picked due to their low speed. Unlike some rulesets that heavily favor certain card types, Reverse Speed encourages a more balanced approach. Therefore, it does require to have a decent-sized collection that is not entirely focused on fast monsters. Cards like Doctor Blight, Caladuum, and Cthulhu destroy in this ruleset, and I am still kicking myself for not picking up these cards when it was cheap back in the day.
