Why Sovereign L1s Are Winning(The L2 Illusion)

The Layer 2 (L2) hype is cooling as Ethereum’s underperformance and oversaturation of rollups - 140+ live, with less than half exceeding $10M in TVL -force a reassessment. Meanwhile, alternative Layer 1s (L1s) like Solana, Sui, and Hyperliquid are proving that full sovereignty, direct fee capture, and novel architectures can drive stronger economic momentum. Market data reinforces this shift: while top L1s have averaged +62% returns, L2s are down -64%, exposing the growing skepticism around their long-term value.

L1s offer design freedom, economic self-sufficiency, and deeper token utility, making them an increasingly attractive choice. Unlike L2s, which must rent security from Ethereum and compete for expensive blob space, L1s retain all network fees and build ecosystems from the ground up. This allows them to craft unique economic models, like Hyperliquid’s consensus mechanism or Sui’s object-centric framework, while also leveraging their tokens as integral network assets rather than mere governance tools. The top revenue-generating blockchains today - Ethereum, Solana, and Tron - are all L1s, emphasizing the advantage of full-stack control.

Yet, the L2 path isn’t obsolete. Projects seeking fast deployment and Ethereum compatibility still benefit from frameworks like the OP Stack and Arbitrum Orbit, which lower development overhead and provide instant access to liquidity and tooling. The tradeoff, however, is limited economic upside—most L2s struggle with profitability, governance-heavy tokens, and reliance on Ethereum’s fluctuating scalability.

The L1 vs. L2 debate is no longer one-sided. While L2s remain a viable scaling approach, the narrative has shifted. L1s now present a more compelling opportunity for those willing to take on the challenge of bootstrapping an independent chain. The real question is no longer which model is superior, but which can generate lasting economic gravity.
