Ripple has officially announced the imminent launch of its new stablecoin, RLUSD, which is set to debut today, December 17. This move marks Ripple's entry into the competitive stablecoin market and fulfills its earlier promise to release a stablecoin by the end of 2024. Ripple now positions itself as a direct competitor to dominant players like Tether (USDT) and Circle's USDC, as well as emerging contenders such as Ethena and PayPal.
In recent weeks, speculation about RLUSD's release had been widespread. Concerns were raised regarding project completion due to the holiday season and the absence of some key partners. However, Ripple has now confirmed that RLUSD will soon be available on multiple platforms, underscoring its commitment to challenging established stablecoin issuers.
According to Ripple, each RLUSD token will be fully backed by U.S. dollar deposits and U.S. government bonds, ensuring transparency and trust for users. RLUSD will initially be launched on two major blockchain networks—XRP Ledger and Ethereum—and will integrate into Ripple Payments in 2025. The stablecoin has already received regulatory approval from the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS), a crucial milestone for its rollout.
RLUSD will be accessible via platforms such as Uphold, MoonPay, Archax, and CoinMENA, with listings confirmed on centralized exchanges (CEXs) like Bitso, Bullish, Bitstamp, Mercado Bitcoin, Independent Reserve, and Zero Hash. Ripple has also announced plans to expand RLUSD's availability to additional exchanges and other blockchain ecosystems in subsequent phases.
This launch signals Ripple's strategic ambition to carve out a significant share of the stablecoin market, offering new competition in a space currently dominated by established players. By leveraging its existing infrastructure and partnerships, Ripple aims to position RLUSD as a reliable and widely adopted stablecoin for global financial operations.
