A new giant is among us, as Bybit surpasses Coinbase in trading volumes, becoming the second largest exchange after Binance. 

According to data from analytics firm Kaiko, the CeFi sector is undergoing a major reorganization, with market shares and trading volumes increasingly influenced by Bybit's rapid growth.

The report reveals that Bybit saw notable expansion in 2024, with its market share increasing from 8% in October 2023 to 16% currently, thus surpassing Coinbase.

Although Coinbase has seen an increase in its market share (+1%) and Binance, with a share reduced from 60% to 54%, has reached new agreements with US regulators, no one has managed to match Bybit's performance , not even international exchanges like Upbit.

Kaiko attributes Bybit's success to extremely competitive rates in the CeFi sector and advantageous promotions such as commission-free trading on USDC, introduced last year. Furthermore, the boom in trading volumes was fueled by Bitcoin and Ethereum trades, whose weight in total volumes rose from 17% to 53% in just one year.

In contrast, on platforms like Binance, the trading share of BTC and ETH has declined from 59% a year ago to 43% currently, while altcoin trading is on the rise.

Bybit's expansion of derivatives offerings took advantage of Binance's regulatory challenges to gain more market space. Overall, the CeFi sector is showing signs of strong growth. Exchange trading volumes have been steadily increasing since late 2023, with average 30-day volumes up 278% for OKX, 239% for Binance, and 264% for Bybit. Coinbase has also seen positive growth, albeit at a slower rate, with an increase of 193% since October 2023.
