Christmas Event Recap
January 3rd 2023, by Lucvend
Xmas season is over! Calm on the family side but very active for the 2022 Christmas Event. As I said in previous articles, the Christmas event is my favorite because of the game mechanics but mostly for its vivid colors and ambiance. So how did it go for me?
Personal recap:
I started to prepare for this year’s event many months ago. I had bought the previous edition’s resources (antlers, bells, eggnog) in the Auction House (AH), ensured to get those in the Adventure Road (AR) and also acquired a few tree blueprints in both AH and AR. These efforts allowed me to have from the start enough candy canes for the entire quest chain, plenty of bells, 2 Tiny Christmas Tree BP and 1 Christmas Tree BP. I also had all previous Xmas cubies except the Snowman (I’ll get you someday).
As soon as 00:00 UTC struck on Dec 21st, my GF (Flyppers) and I checked the AR challenges and the quest chain requirements. The preparation paid off from the start as I was able to clear the first 5 blocks right away up to the 3 Mystery Box (MB) timer. Fortunately, I had saved the latest MB for exactly this. So I only had to wait for 2 more, meaning I couldn’t do more before the next morning for the quest chain.
We then went out to place our Xmas Trees on top of the Uservaults (UV) that had previously been identified to host them. Barely 30 minutes after the start of the event we had 3 Tiny Trees and 2 Medium Trees in place. Flyppers got the Ugly Sweater Cubie BP from the first Medium Tree she hit, and nothing for me. The next day, I drove alone (being on vacation) to the Montreal Crypto Park to harvest the trees over there and did some recon through the rest of the city to see what’s around. It was still early in the event so I did not see much. I redid that circuit with Flyppers on the friday night where I received my Ugly Sweater Cubie BP that we were able to print that same evening having enough resources. We were able to unlock the quest chain up to the Nutcracker Cubie Block and we placed our Epic Trees. Hunting was kept to a minimum through the 24th and 25th for obvious reasons.
My local hunting area
Once the festivities were completed, we went medium core hunter mode… That is, driving every evening to the Montreal Crypto Park with at its peak 5 Epic trees. Gathering lumps of coal and balls of yarn went into overdrive. Managed to get 1 walnut but no luck on the Nutcracker BP on the 25th. But I managed to get it on the 26th and was able to print it on the 28th thus finishing the quest chain. Unfortunately, Flyppers was unable to get the Epic BP to her great chagrin. During our runs, we were able to meet our fellow hunters Systemcrash and Twistedmind, who we welcomed home to wait for the reset on the 29th (UTC).
Park Fredrick-Back: Montreal's Cryptopark with 4 of the 5 epic trees placed.
Likes (L) and dislikes (D):
- (L) The designs, and Christmas questions.
- (L) Local player coordination to locate the trees and meet ups to hunt together.
- (D) The fact that I prepared beforehand and the fact that there was no new common cubie meant that I did not need to hunt for canes and hit the Tiny Trees.
- (L) Although, this meant I did not have to hunt as hard at the beginning. Preparation allowed me to preserve my key stack.
- (D) No Christmas music for the Christmas category
- (D) No new HQ Skin
Lessons learned from this year’s Christmas Event
- You really need many other active players within a 30 minute drive to finish such an event. The compounding effect of trees increases dramatically resource drops and the number of tries for BP drops.
- Greater tree density in an area is only possible if players coordinate UV placement. UV owners should alternate the placement of their UVs so that Rare and Epic trees can be placed close together to allow harvesting by walking.
- Having the previous year’s resources and cubies definitely helps. It allowed me to push through the first steps of the quest chain quickly.
- Taking time off from work and other activities is a luxury that you should take if you can, especially at reset times.
- Plan your tree harvesting run for a double dip at reset. It saves so much of your time for the rest of the day.
- When you are close to the end of the event, start collecting resources for next year.
My thoughts
This event is psychologically hard. While it is a fun one, the stress of not getting the required resources and blueprint to advance on the quest chain or to completing the event is very high. I have witnessed anger and despair, both live and on social media. This game is a highly addictive drug that gives a huge dose of dopamine when successful. Many were complaining that the game is rigged against them, that it is impossible, and many other issues.
The problem is not the game, but us players. We have to be able to identify the effects this game has on each of us. This game is designed and meant to be hard. If we want value for our crypto and cubies, there has to be scarcity for them. Just like a pack of collectable sport cards, you’ll get mostly common cards and maybe 1 rare. Everytime, you hit a vault it is a lottery. You win sometimes, win nothing most times. We have to understand that we are not entitled to any of its items or crypto. Once we understand this, we are able to take a step back and just enjoy the game. You can be disappointed in not getting the BP, but at least your stress levels would be much lower.
In final thoughts, this was overall a great edition of the Xmas events even though teaks are needed here and there. I hope you enjoyed it. Take the time in January to recharge your batteries and restack for keys. There will be no Chinese New Year and do not expect any special events before Coin Hunt Fest. I’ll start working on an article covering the upcoming changes. Stay Tuned.
I wish you all a Happy New Year and a great 2023 CHW Hunting Season!!!
