*POWER* *MONEY* *CUNTROL* protest performance art against the Tory government and the increasing gap between the rich and poor (basic elitism)

Last year I did some pieces of protest performance around the idea of the economy, the state and capitalism...

Here's how it went and why I did it...

Well... tother day (Friday) i got all dressed up in my suit made of fake money and my  (seemingly standard for my dance pieces nowadays) clown face make up and went out dancing round town with my weapon of choice - my hula hoop and a fuck load of attitude ... my beef? The status quo... the situation we all seem to be living amidst... i have a job, as far as I’m concerned a good one. I get paid well and i love what i do... and yea, I’ve got a degree now, so if i really wanted to, i could go and get myself one of them ‘proper’ jobs, except, i do feel pretty privileged to get satisfaction from what i do and i really like the individual i work with and for - that shit is priceless. But the reality is, I’m stuck in the same system many of us are... that many folk out there are getting rinsed way worse than i am currently - I’m a single mum with a full time job and my kids are at school and i have support from their fathers in regards co parenting, but many folk are not in that position and are trapped in a deeper level of...poverty...? No, I’m not poor, i can feed my kids, myself, i have a roof over my head, prospects...and somehow, despite this fucked up value driven society, i manage to have belief in myself and my worth but I’ll probably never buy a house, I’ll probably always be answering to ‘the man’, cos that man only has his eye on his own best interests, and those who prop him up... oh elitism and it’s babies, overly milk fed boys, sucking at them titties that we all should be getting a fair share of.

HMRC are not the root cause of all evil but they represent one of the ways it is made hard for people not born into money or middle class security and wealth to be socially mobile - in the upwards direction. I got a pay rise last year but it has ultimately meant very little, because all my  benefits of working, tax credits, have been slashed... it’s all good, like i said, i know I’m not one of the worst off, and maybe many folk reading this (still) aren’t either. But fact is, there are hoards of folk out there ‘begging for lolly’, fucked way over by this system that couches itself as supportive when actually it’s just there to keep folk in their place. Which is far enough below that thin slice of richness to allow them (the elite) to maintain an order ‘only beneficial to themselves’... oh, minimum wage has risen to the living wage! No it didn’t, it just went up and got reframed. And anyone caught in that tax credits loop would have benefited little in real terms cos  of the above reasons I’ve already given. Nevermind the rise in zero hours contracts and folks being expected to do double their work load for the wage they were on a few years back, nevermind the fact that EVERYONE is feeling it at the moment, that pinch, that fear... making so many folk close ranks - which inevitably leads to the rise in conservatism (with a small c) that we see all around us... sorry HMRC, you are not the only culprits... i did a few other dances that day, at other sites and emblems of the ways in which capitalism creates and maintains poverty...and have a few more up my sleeve too,  but this one, this song, resonated most for me... cos that old social mobility rouse been going on for such a long time now and I’m just wondering... when are people gonna get sick of it and say enough is enough?

I’m not a politician and perhaps don’t understand anywhere near enough about global finances but there has gotta be a better way than feeding the rich with the blood, sweat and tears of the poor, vulnerable and marginalised... the wage don’t fit at both ends of the spectrum basically.

I don’t expect to change anything by doing this but i have a right to express my discontent and anger... and I will...

This is part 2 of my anti capitalism rant/performance... it is mainly executed in a #gatedcommunity in #nottingham... now, i have nothing against anyone in particular who lives in The Park but this is one of the most elite areas in Nottingham city and my point, which is the same point in this song (The bug by #fuckaz ) is that part of the issue in society is the lack of #socialconscience that often seems to go hand in hand with upper and also middle classes... it’s that #closingranks thing, that immediate #usandthem... this is not specifically to do with race or gender but my guess is that it is largely white here and also that despite the money, most of the women have in some way had to play second fiddle in their households (not risen as quickly in their careers/ earn less money/ etc) due to how unequal domesticity is in #heteronormative marriages (with children)... the truth is though that living somewhere like this represents an identity of being #privileged... and much as people always think that they and they alone have earned what they have in life, the bare reality is that most of the time, people are born into identities that either give them a head start (white, male, middle classed, beautiful, able bodied) or put an obstacle in their path that means they have to work at least twice as hard... my message is simple... if you occupy a position of privilege and have a sense of social conscience, you should be using that position to enable others who are less privileged to rise up... not blaming the poor, vulnerable and marginalised for not having what you have... have some empathy for a start for whatever its like to be living on benefits for example, for single parents struggling to make ends meet, for folk who didn’t benefit from the luxury you may have had being middle classed of having a solid education cos you went to the right school, had parents who were able to put the efforts in to push and encourage and support you... and maybe do something, that benefits those groups - and not for the sake of the kudos you receive in your community, it’s not about charity balls, maybe give £20 to that refugee woman who looks desperate rather than try desperately NOT to look at her.... i am not trying to say that everyone that lives here or that is middle classed is selfish and greedy but, there needs to be more acceptance from people in general about what privilege means and how that reflects on equality. Katie Hopkins once said she would never let her children play with kids with certain names that were suggestive of a lower class because of her  perception of what they would be like... that sort of fascism needs to be eradicated. We are all human... but i think we become less human when we try to remove ourselves from the suffering of those around us and tell ourselves we are thriving because we are special...

The middle section is filmed outside of RBS in Nottingham. The epitomy of big bankers with zero sense of social conscience or sense of responsibility. Their desire to become the biggest bank in the world has been at the expense of their customers and in fact any UK taxpayers expense... individuals carrying on with this attitude are dangerous enough, but when you have a powerful industry such as a bank doing that, it moves in to a slightly more sinister realm...

Part 3 of my anti capitalism rant/protest, is a wee bit more lighthearted. Cos i couldn’t tackle the idea of poverty, living in Nottingham without having a dance with my man, Robin... the original rude bwoy... the embodiment of #socialconscience - robin’ from the rich and giving to those cast out, in poverty, living in the hoods of old... THIS is what #nottingham is about and famous for... fighting the man and #grassroots action... it is a city of the #proletariat in more ways than one but one that weighs heavy on my mind currently is that we are one of the poorest constituencies in the country, with one of the lowest average wages and the highest cuts per capita from government to council...last year we in Nottingham lost an average of £28 per household, whilst those in Surrey (not Nottingham) beneftted from the £150 million  hand out from the government to help with council cuts- and the previous 2 years Nottingham suffered a £254 slash in money per person whereas Windsor (benefitting from the £300 million government handout) only lost £34... (https://www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/hidden-pages/budget-consultation-201718/ and http://www.mynottinghamnews.co.uk/city-council-sets-budget-for-201617/). Windsor and Surrey are not poor places, the average disposable income for London as a whole being £27,151... Nottingham has the lowest in the country at £12,232 (https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/business/2018/may/24/nottingham-has-lowest-household-disposable-income-in-uk) - all is not fair and equal. The Conservatives are about as opposite from Robin Hood as we can get seemingly, robin’ from the poor to feed the (relatively) rich... There is a massive problem and bias in our government and the way this country is run... no, as the gorgeous #gilscottheron sings, #therevolutionwillnotbetelevised, cos it will be ultimately played out on the streets, in the schools and in the consciousness of the people that make up our society... again, like i stated in part 1 of this rant, i do not expect to be able to change anything by prancing around, trussed up in silly outfits in poignant places but i have a right to express my discontent and social média can be a tool for good... nothing at all wrong with posting about what make up products you use, the cars you like or what you ate for dinner last night but there is so much more out there to shout about... and art (music, dance, literature) definitely has the power to disturb...
