The easy sprouting guide
We have sprouting seeds and beans for many moons now. Tried all the fancy sprouting trays and jars. Tried sprouting alfalfa seeds, radish seeds etc.
We settled on mung beans for a couple of reasons
- don’t need to buy any over priced equipment
- ready to eat in 24 hours (taste like sweet peas when first germinated)
- can take the setup to work and farm mung beans in my donga
Step by step

place one full tablespoon in a glass or suitable container. Can use up to tablespoons at a time.

boil the electric jug to 80 degrees and add small amount of cold water until you can stick your finger in and it still feels hot. Needs to be less than 60 degrees or it will kill the seeds. They are thick skinned so you won’t hurt their feelings or kill them immediately.
In my donga the water is not that hot so leave the bathroom tap running slowly into the cup. Eventually the heat is absorbed into the mung beans and cup

leave to soak for 6-8 hours. All the mung beans need to have started to swell. Otherwise they will be like little rocks. Soak a bit longer. If you leave them too long the water starts to bubble and you can’t rinse the smell out.

have been soaking for 8 hours

rinse thoroughly

place in container, put lid on. Creates a micro climate. Mung beans can handle a small amount of surplus water, seeds can’t.

these are from yesterdays effort (32 hours) and will be sprinkled on my dinner. Could have eaten them for lunch had I been home or taken them with me for a nutritious snack on the go.
The next sprouting adventure
Sprouting seeds requires the special equipment, as they don’t tolerate wet feet like the mung beans do.
Recently found out about the amazing benefits of broccoli seed sprouts.
Broccoli vs Broccoli Sprouts - NRF2 Pathway
Decided they are well worth the extra effort.
The 2kg of organic seeds arrived over a month ago. It took some time to research and source the desired equipment. Visited the organic shop, hardware shop’s seed section, health food shops. Nothing that meet my needs.
Eventually found online 450ml mason jars with stainless steel mesh lids. Ordered 8 to make postage worthwhile. Not sure how many jars will need as they reckon it takes 5-7 days to be ready to eat. But they said the same about mung beans. Can always give them to like minded people. They would also work fine for the mung beans. It is going to take a bit of experimentation to get the farming streamlined so I can do it in my donga
DISCLAIMER: I promise no AI or mung beans were harmed in the researching, editing and publishing of this. But lots of CO2 was produced, doing my bit to make planet earth green.
