We have just had our lunch. Beans, rice and boiled banana, washed down with a Acerola Cherry smoothie. Yesterday we had picked a large bowl of the Acerola Cherries from our visit to the family sitio (farm) with the young cousins.
Our grandson is fascinated by the chickens (hens). There were lots of hens, roosters and 6 chicks at the sitio. They got to munch on our left over mango and banana scraps. It’s going to be hard to eat bananas again when I get back home.
Young cousin Miguel went to the neighbours and came back with 4 large fresh coconuts. The top was cut off, hole made and coconut placed upside down in a grande plastic jug. It made a couple litres of delicioso água de coco. The stuff they sell in cardboard boxes back home just does not compare.
Our Aunty who we are staying with in Cachoeiro de Itapemirim has 12 chooks who live in the backyard among the mango, guava and apple custard trees. At night they roost in the trees, which is the same level as the varanda.

We had just finished discussing the Acerola Cherry, where it originated from and would it grow in WA.
- aka Barbados cherries or West Indian cherries
- that gives a clue to the origin (Lesser Antilles islands of the southern Caribbean Seas)
- introduced and naturalised to Brasil
- Brasil largest producer of Acerola
- 1,800% of your Daily Value for vitamin C in one cup
- will grow back home
The conversation moved onto Kombi’s. Our grandson is Kombi mad. And there are lots of VW Kombis in Brasil. We were wondering if the Kombi is still made in Brasil?
- Volkswagen Kombi began production in Brazil on September 2, 1957
- officially ended in 2013 after 56 years of continuous manufacturing
- end of Kombi production was primarily due to new safety laws in Brazil that required vehicles to be equipped with dual front airbags and anti-lock brakes starting on January 1, 2014
- is an iconic Brasilian vehicle, celebrated for its long history and cultural significance
- my wife has an old photo of her Dad and siblings in front of the family Kombi “muito bom”
Never realised that the Brasil production ran from the beginning, only 7 years later than German production. Had always thought that production moved to Brasil when Germany ceased production. The Kombi was also produced in South Africa.
For the Grandson’s 8th birthday he was given the 1970 Matchbox #23 Volkswagen Camper. Took awhile but found one on trademe.co.nz

DISCLAIMER: I promise no AI was harmed in the researching, editing and publishing of this (as much as I might have wanted to). But lots of CO2 was produced, doing my bit to make planet earth green.
