Independence Day Reflections: The Shared Spirit of the USA and Liberland

249 years of liberty.

On July 4th, the United States celebrates its Independence Day, marking the historic moment in 1776 when the Thirteen Colonies declared their sovereignty from British rule. Far across the Atlantic, the Free Republic of Liberland, a young nation purposefully founded during Thomas Jefferson’s 272ns birthday on April 13th 2015, shares a strikingly similar spirit of liberty and self-determination. While centuries apart, the motivations behind the creation of both nations resonate with a universal desire for freedom, individual rights, and the pursuit of a society unburdened by overreaching authority. As we commemorate Independence Day, let us explore the parallel ideals that inspired the founding of the United States and Liberland, and how these principles continue to inspire freedom-loving people worldwide.

A Rejection of Overreach and Tyranny

The United States was born out of a deep frustration with British colonial rule, particularly the imposition of taxes and laws without representation. The Stamp Act of 1765, the Townshend Acts, and the Coercive Acts of 1774—known as the Intolerable Acts in the colonies—fueled resentment among colonists who felt their rights as Englishmen were being violated. The Declaration of Independence, penned primarily by Thomas Jefferson, articulated these grievances, asserting that governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed. When King George III refused to address the colonists’ petitions, independence became the only path forward.

Similarly, Liberland’s founding was a response to perceived overreach by modern states. Established by Vít Jedlička on a small, unclaimed parcel of land between Croatia and Serbia, Liberland emerged as a bold experiment in minimal governance. Its creators were driven by frustration with bloated bureaucracies, excessive taxation, and restrictions on personal and economic freedoms in many parts of the world. Like the American colonists, Liberland’s founders sought to create a society where individuals could thrive without the heavy hand of centralized control. The Liberland Constitution, much like the U.S. Declaration, emphasizes voluntary cooperation and the protection of individual rights as the cornerstone of governance.

The Pursuit of Individual Liberty

At the heart of the American Revolution was the Enlightenment-inspired belief in “unalienable Rights” to “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Influenced by thinkers like John Locke, the Declaration of Independence proclaimed that all men are created equal and endowed with natural rights that no government can justly deny. This radical idea shifted the focus from collective subjugation to individual empowerment, setting a precedent for democratic ideals worldwide.

Liberland echoes this commitment to individual liberty with its motto, “To Live and Let Live.” The nation’s philosophy is rooted in libertarian principles, advocating for a government that exists solely to protect property rights and personal freedoms. Liberland’s blockchain-based governance system ensures transparency and minimizes bureaucratic interference, allowing citizens to pursue their goals with minimal restrictions. Just as the United States sought to create a society where individuals could chart their own destinies, Liberland envisions a community where personal responsibility and freedom are paramount.

Self-Governance and Innovation

The American founders were not merely rebelling against British rule; they were pioneering a new form of governance. The Declaration of Independence was not a legal document but a bold statement of intent, laying the groundwork for a nation built on popular consent and self-determination. The subsequent U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights codified these principles, creating a system designed to limit government power and protect individual rights.

Liberland, too, is an experiment in innovative governance. By leveraging blockchain technology, Liberland aims to create a decentralized, efficient, and transparent system that empowers citizens to participate directly in decision-making. Its meritocratic citizenship model rewards contributions to the nation, fostering a community driven by voluntary cooperation rather than coercion. Like the American founders, Liberland’s creators are not content to replicate existing systems but are striving to build something new—a model of governance that prioritizes freedom and innovation.

A Beacon for the World

The Declaration of Independence inspired revolutions and independence movements globally, from the French Revolution to Vietnam’s declaration of independence in 1945. Its assertion of universal rights became a moral standard for human dignity and self-governance. Similarly, Liberland aspires to be a beacon for those disillusioned with traditional state models. By demonstrating that a society can function with minimal government intervention, Liberland challenges the status quo and invites others to reimagine what a free society can be.

Celebrating Independence Today

As we celebrate Independence Day, the shared motivations of the United States and Liberland remind us that the quest for freedom is timeless. Both nations, in their own eras, rejected oppressive systems in favor of societies built on individual rights, self-governance, and the pursuit of happiness. While the United States has grown into a global power, and Liberland is the newest country in the world, their founding spirits are united by a belief in the potential of free people to create something extraordinary.

On this July 4th, let us honor the courage of the American founders and the vision of Liberland’s pioneers. May their examples inspire us to protect and expand the boundaries of liberty, ensuring that the flame of freedom burns brightly for generations to come.

Happy Independence Day from Liberland!
