Gen Z Youth: Indistinct Traits and an Environment of Isolation

Dear Friends,

We all know that the adolescence is a transitional period situated between the imaginative world of childhood and the realistic world of adulthood. It is a confusing phase, one that is neither fully childlike nor fully mature. It is a stage that simultaneously harbors the "instant gratification" mindset characteristic of children and the desire for "independent decision-making" typically associated with adults. This phase can be both beautiful and at the same time, deeply perplexing too.

The body of an individual, until then merely a child, suddenly begins to grow. This growth occurs with astonishing rapidity. They shoot up in height almost overnight; their voices deepen and crack; and hair begins to appear on their bodies and in their private regions, suddenly bringing these areas to life. However, the psychological changes occurring within the mind do not keep pace with the speed of these physical transformations. While adolescents may appear physically grown and mature on the outside, they remain, internally, the very same children they were before.

This imbalance between physical and psychological development lies at the root of most of the challenges faced by adolescents. They struggle much like a person holding a valuable object in their hands, yet not knowing how to properly utilize it. The adolescents themselves often fail to recognize this internal struggle; their parents, however, sense it acutely. This is precisely why so many parents find themselves asking: "How, then, should we conduct ourselves now?" The question arises:

Often, adults are left confused and bewildered by the behaviors of young adolescents, finding them incomprehensible. Individuals who are calm and composed one day may be angry and agitated the next. Their likes and dislikes are constantly shifting; their thoughts and dreams lack stability. Even their circle of friends is in a constant state of flux. Parents often struggle to comprehend these ever-changing personality traits.

"Just a short while ago, he insisted that this was exactly what he wanted; now, he declares that he wants absolutely nothing to do with it!"—such sentiments often lead to parental frustration. Consequently, they may begin to view their children's actions with suspicion. However, this is not a contradiction; rather, it is a natural and integral part of human development. Indeed, within the entire spectrum of human growth, no other stage witnesses development as rapid and intense as that of adolescence. Furthermore, the inherent imbalance between physical and mental growth is a characteristic unique to this specific phase of life. Therefore, as adults, it is only when we cease viewing this as a "stage to be controlled"—and instead recognize it as a "stage to be understood and guided"—that we can foster positive and constructive changes in the character and behavior of adolescents.

Physical Changes: Outward Growth, Inward Confusion

The primary hallmark of adolescence is the physical growth. Within a span of just a few months, height may increase significantly, body shape may undergo transformation, and the voice may change in pitch and tone. Specific changes—such as breast development in females, muscle growth in males, and an increase in body hair—are common occurrences during this period.

While we as adults may tend to see these physical transformations as a general developmental routine and unremarkable for the adolescents themselves.

They normally carry a deep sense of anxiety regarding this matter heavily. The primary drive during this age is to present themselves to their peers in the most impressive manner as and when it is possible. In the era of social media, they largely seek validation and depending for their physical transformations from these platforms so much.

Some individuals feel quite ashamed. They simply cannot able to accept their own bodies as well. Others compare themselves to others and feel quite inadequate. This is not only a mere physical issue; rather, it is a "comparative pressure" that has emerged among today's younger generation as a whole.

The modern social media platforms have intensified physical comparisons. Furthermore, they have exaggerated the nature of these comparisons. The real world is authentic; everyone encountered there is genuine—authentic friends, authentic faces, and authentic interactions.

Consequently, the physical appearances and comparisons encountered in the real world are also authentic. Observing peers of their own age—who, like themselves, possess their own set of imperfections—helps them grasp reality and fosters a sense of acceptance.

In the other side, Social media, however, is characterised by exaggeration.

The profiles encountered there are purely represent highly idealised portrayals exaggerated beauty, exaggerated lifestyles, and exaggerated comparisons. This blend of exaggeration and artificiality instills an inferiority complex in adolescents, causing them to feel ashamed of their own bodies and physical appearance. This explains why we observe such widespread body image issues and inferiority complexes among today's adolescents.
Are we as responsible  adults are addressing this issue appropriately?

Do as parents, are we truly understand the nature of this problem?

Certainly not.

As this is often the case of this generation, we urgently need to continue to make comparisons regarding physical appearance, physically, they... Instead of helping to alleviate the inferiority complex that they carry and we exacerbate it further by criticizing their bodies.

There is a significant disparity between of the heavy attitudes the previous generations held regarding "body-shaming" and the anxiety experienced by this present generation.

As responsible parents and teachers, we must understand this distinction deeply.
