Sandra is a female rabbit, we were expecting her kits on Thursday or the morning of Friday but they didn’t come. I came back from work on Friday and went to check on her and still there were no kitties. Friday was day 32 and normally my female rabbits (does) drop on the 31st day once they conceive as it is the usual number of days a doe carries her pregnancy.

I wasn’t worried though as I have recorded 30, 31, 32 and 33 days but 31 days about 90% of all the delivery times at the farm. Sandra had pulled her furs so it was a good sign that she was about to deliver her babies.

Just when I was about to sleep I, I went to put feed in their hutches and lo and behold the kits had come. She had 6 of them and they’re all looking great. 3 of the kits have black patches which mean they’ll be white and black in color like their mom, while the other 3 will be all white like their dad.

Their skins are currently bare but as they get to 4 to 5 days you’ll start noticing some fur on their body. They are also born blind so they can’t see at the moment and they rely on touch and smell to move around so there will be a lot of sniffing going on. They rely totally on their mother for food and that through breast feeding. She jumps into the nest box once a day and they suck until they are filled.

They usually spend most of the day sleeping and cuddling onto each other as they need the warmth to grow. They grow noticeably very fast and big these early days as that can grow more than 2 times their current size in the next 10 days.
