Today to put it plainly was a tough day. When the attack first started making it the rounds and when I first saw the videos and photos I have to say I though the two National Guardsman were dead. So when the news broke a little later saying that they had I thought back to the video of those shot not moving at all over the course of a minute and fifteen seconds and the aid being applied to a guardsman's head. It wasn't hard to go oh crap.... it happened the two did get hit in the head and that's typically fatal. 

So when the West Virginia Governor later said that now they were being told that the two Guardsman were in critical condition but still alive it gave me a sliver of hope. Since still hours later they haven't announced a death I am growing a little more hopeful that these two can recover. What was confirmed during the press conference was in itself damning. As someone who lives in DC and has watched Mayor Bowser the last almost 5 years when she came out and said that this was a targeted attack aimed at the National Guard..... well that speaks volumes. 

The fact that this individual just rounded a corner with his gun already drawn opening fire on the two National Guardsman is pretty much textbook for it being a terrorism related incident. Now as we learn even more additional flags are being raised. Rahmanullah Lakanwal entered the U.S. in 2021 during "Operation Allies Welcome" which was the ongoing humanitarian mission as the country fell to the Taliban. He (Lakanwal) applied for his Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) while his asylum claim was process. It was only in April of this year that his asylum application was accepted and just 7 months later he carried out an attack like this. 

While we do not know the motive or what caused him to do something like this it does fall into a growing trend of political violence in the U.S.. I am sure we are going to see the FBI, intelligence agencies, Home Land, etc. tear into how he was granted asylum and then within months attempted to murder people in uniform. For everyone who says DC is safe well you are kind of right..... DC is safe in the areas where the guard has been deployed to do their high visibility patrols but in all the areas they aren't it isn't. Hell for Halloween hundreds of youths in Navy Yard tried to get into fist fights with the National Guard leading to a huge police response and a curfew once again put into effect. DC has had I don't even know how many curfews this year to try to stop teenagers from looting and shooting fireworks into apartment buildings (that was on the forth of July.... it was like a battle zone in Navy Yard). 

For whatever this guy wanted to accomplish it is safe to say the exact opposite is going to happen. Another 500 National Guardsman are being deployed (the District currently has roughly 2300 so a pretty significant increase) and if this had to do with foreign policy we have seen time and time again that when something like this happens not only does it unite Americans but it rallies them in the exact opposite interest of what the individual wanted. Not to mention the absolute sledgehammer this guy just took to the American asylum system. It is going to be absolutely ripped to shreds to try and make sure that this does not happen again.
