When it comes to protecting your data and ensuring your privacy, one of the biggest holes that currently faces the public is the use of using your email address. This is a common and widespread practice, though we have learned over the years how companies more often than not lack adequate security for these databases. For many, the way they get around this is dedicating a specific email address to be the "junk" email address that receives all of the sign-up spam you get.
Brave has moved to try and address this issue with its recently announced Email Aliases. Email Aliases allow you to sign up for something without using your real primary address by forwarding the emails you signed up for, creating a break in the chain for privacy. If a company becomes compromised, you can easily deactivate the email alias and create another one without dealing with the impact of having to redo your entire email.
To create and manage the five aliases that Brave allows you to create for free, you have to create a Brave Account. Brave Accounts leverage OPAQUE to ensure that the password for your Brave Account never goes to Brave's servers. Unless you opt into Brave Sync, the password doesn't even leave your device.
For now, while Brave is testing out the Email Aliases feature, users can create five aliases for free. The team is working on bringing the feature to mobile devices as well. I cannot wait to test this out and see how well or not it functions.
