By Web3Gazillion | Joeofweb3 | 6 Nov 2023

Introduction:

Have you ever heard of the concept of play-to-earn crypto games? To some people, It might sound new in their ear, and to some also, they might have been beneficiaries or victims of this concept.

In this article, I'll answer the question: Are Crypto Games Scams?

Journey with me, as I uncover the truth and mission behind this idea.

What are Play-to-earn games?

A play-to-earn game is a category of video game where participants are incentivized or rewarded with tokens and NFT's, that have real-world value when they hit a new milestones.

The play-to-earn crypto games were built to revolutionize, not just the world of finance in Blockchain Technology, but the world of entertainment, enabling gamers to earn while having fun.

What are the Benefits attached to the Play-to-earn crypto games?

There are lots of benefits attached to play-to-earn crypto games and below are some of them.

1. Earning of Cryptocurrencies: The play-to-earn crypto games give gamers the opportunity and privilege to earn crypto while having fun. Some people turned it into a side hustle as it helps take care of certain bills.

2. Full ownership of in-game assets

Whenever gamers complete a mission or hit a milestone, they are rewarded with in-game assets such as virtual lands, weapons and armor, digital pets, and other virtual items that can be traded in the platform's open market or any secondary NFT market.

3. Educational Value: These games can help to enlighten participants about Blockchain Technology and Cryptocurrencies, thereby fostering financial literacy and room for innovation.

However, as good as this innovation may sound, some gaming platforms have seized this opportunity to scam participants in various ways that I'll be explaining.

Of Course, you know that wherever money flows, there, lives a scammer waiting to take advantage of a few ignorant people, and it can't be any different from the crypto game space. Below are some tactics used by scammers.

Creation of fake projects and tokens:

Scammers create fake play-to-earn projects complete with white paper, social media, and websites. They encourage participants to engage and invest. Always do your diligent research before entrusting your time, funds, and personal information to any project.

Fraudulent websites and links:

This is the most popular method fraudsters use to achieve their devious mission. They create fraudulent websites and links, mimicking an authentic project or gaming platform, and send the websites to individuals' emails and DM's, telling them to click, follow the instructions stipulated, and earn some amount of tokens. The websites were designed to collect important data of participants that will aid the them in moving out any asset they find in the wallet of the participants.

Ponzi Schemes: They often create an offer that is irresistible to desperate audiences and brainwash them into investing and participating. If an offer sounds too good to be true, it is probably too good to be true.

How do I protect myself from potential scams in the play-to-earn crypto game?

To protect yourself from potential play-to-earn crypto games, you'll have to do the following,

1. Invest in knowledge:

Let's get it straight, the people who always fall victim to these scams are mostly the ignorant ones. This doesn't mean that experts don't get scammed, they do get scammed, but not in simple and childish ways.

Investing in knowledge will give you an edge over these scammers as you can easily spot a scam play-to-earn game by merely glancing at it.

2. Conduct thorough research on the game and its developers:

Many gamers don't research deeply on the project or gaming platform they want to participate in. They see it as stress, not knowing that the stress can save them time and funds. Always prioritize deep research and be satisfied with your findings before investing or participating in any gaming platform.

3. Always seek validation from your mentors even after your research:

Seeking validation from your mentors can save you from a whole lot of scams out there. Your mentors have been in the game for quite several years, and probably have been scammed. They are in the best position to guide your decisions on the types of links, websites, and projects you engage in.

Conclusion:

The innovation of the Play-to-earn crypto games has revolutionized the way many view gaming activities. It's no longer seen as an activity that wastes time and resources but is now seen by some entities as an entertaining side hustle. However, scammers have capitalized on the allure of play-to-earn crypto games to extort participants' funds and leave them empty. This calls for extreme carefulness in whatever play-to-earn crypto game you want to participate in.

Use the precautions listed in the article and save yourself from potential scams.
