The electric bike - that delayed need

By Martin Kelen | Industrial Design | 22 Mar 2021

Despite the all wide known troubles, cities are growing up, the distances are becoming longer, spaces are shrinking and the need of covering distances are demanding more efficient transports

Many of us ask for a way to move, cheaper, comfy, safer... may be more ecological too, it's a plus. Analizing matchs, the winner is: The bicycle

But no one wants to get in the office sweat sodden, so a step further is the electric bike

That means just a conventional bicycle with a motor attached... or not?

This is the cheapest option I found on internet today for an electric kit. It's cool if you already have a bike, but this requires advanced hand ability and several hours of work. Also as a result you will get a kind of heavy, wire matted monster.

If you have not a bike, the cheapest option is:

900 bucks for a ready to go bike is an attractive deal, consider a new basic bike cost something like $200

Where to locate the motor is an important think to consider. Accord to recomendations

The mid-drive type gives you a more balanced ride, but is uncommon and more expensive.

Perhaps you aim to something with better image, a vehicle useful to go to work and also to have a ride for relax on weekends

Here enters the design and its ideas for changing the world

An electric bicycle should by like a conventional with a motor? Or it sholud look like more likely a motorcycle? The bascule market bend to both sides and I think it shoud be none of them, It must be a new kind of product.

You can say "Man, it is impossible, a two wheeled vehicle will look like a bike, unfailingly"

An I answer "You are right... and not. What I want to say is take the advantages from the electric technology and use it in a more efficient typology"

I mean, not as light as a bicycle and not as heavy as a motorcycle. Within a couple of hours of thinking, I design this

The motor in front should help to seize the "drag" force instead of "push" force. And keeping the pedals should assist the effort and be usefull if the battery totally drain out. The 45° degree regulation sadle is good tho reach the correct posture with minimun path. After upload it I realize I forgot include the lights.

Hope not much in future we all can find more options of electric bikes for travel the city

"Hey, What if it rains"

"Man, I don't know, pick a taxi or semething"
