Social networking in the age of Web3: the example of CyberConnect

By ifiwasfrank | In the mood for crypto | 22 Jun 2023

The struggle to establish the ultimate social network on web3 continues to rage. On many blockchains, platforms have sprung up or are emerging that aim to compete against giants such as Twitter, Reddit, or Discord to grab web3 users looking for the most suitable crypto-sphere habitat. Although there is no dominant reality to date, what I am about to introduce to you is a fast-growing, cross-chain, and user-friendly project, that has all the requirements to go far.

The creation of a fully decentralized social network platform is a goal that several blockchain projects have been pursuing for years. Just think of Torum on Ethereum network, noise.cash on Bitcoin Cash, Appics on Tezos chain, or PeakD on Hive. Just a few examples of an expanding universe.

On Cosmos, we find some of the boldest attempts. Desmos is a blockchain integrally focused on developing a decentralized, user-centric social network. The protocol provides developers with many modules for creating dApps. On Juno, the Howl team developed howl.social, an on-chain micro-blogging dApp designed to reward creators through likes and staking the $HOWL token.

Despite my fascination with Layer 1 belonging to Cosmos, in this article, I propose a project that is foreign (at least for now) to the ecosystem. Although it emerged only a few years ago, it is a promising reality that could mark the furrow in the social network web3 sphere.

CyberConnect

CyberConnect is a social network protocol launched in October 2021 as an alternative to centralized platforms to give users full control of their digital identities. It’s a multi-chain protocol already present on networks such as Ethereum, BSC, and Polygon, and is being expanded to other EVM-compatible networks.

To provide greater flexibility, CyberConnect offers developers a hybrid on and off-chain data storage solution. Users will be able to create an on-chain profile configured with ERC-721 standards that will allow them to connect to all compatible platforms and hold ownership of content. To date, more than one million profiles have been registered, with already more than 50 projects leveraging the CyberConnect protocol for their dApps.

There are three main services offered:

  • CyberProfile: standard for creating decentralized identities that allow access to the Web3;
  • CyberConnect Social Graph: a tool that links our digital identity to content, data, and contacts;
  • CyberWallet: wallet for the safe keeping of digital assets, essential for accessing the full potential of the web3.

Before moving on to the presentation of two of the main dApps, if you are ready to create your own decentralized digital identity and start your Web3 adventure, mint your CyberProfile.

Phaver

Phaver is a hybrid application developed by Lens Protocol that could help bridge users to Web3. You can connect to the application with your Google or Facebook profile, as well as register via email. For crypto users, you can link your CyberProfile and Lens profile to Phaver.

Developed on Polygon for the on-chain part and available on mobile for iOS and Android, Phaver is a clean and simple social network that allows users to publish, like, comment on, and re-share other users’ posts.

One of the peculiarities of the dApp is the possibility of staking on posts. Through this tool, authors can earn Phaver points. The staker can also earn points if he or she is among the first to stake on a post that becomes popular.

Currently staking is free but in the future, it will have a cost in Phaver Utility Token. Points, as of now, can be used to purchase the ability to publish posts in “premium” categories, but soon they will be convertible into utility tokens.

Cred Score, given to profiles to distinguish genuine accounts from bots, has recently been added. Only users with a Cred Score of level 2 and above will be able to redeem Phaver tokens in exchange for points earned on the platform.

To calculate the level of profiles, Cred points are calculated over a 30-day period. The level obtained in this period remains assigned for the next 30 days while the level for the current month is recalculated, and so on.

To earn more Cred Scores, a variety of NFTs can be linked to our Phaver account, such as the Soulbound token by Clique, the Phaver KYC by Galxe, and other selected collections (check out the list). Link3

Link3 is the social network created by CyberConnect to improve the relationship between teams and communities, and can only be accessed through a verifiable identity (the CyberProfile). Through this platform it is possible to follow the profiles of our favorite projects and those of other users, discover web3 content, and participate in the many online events organized.

All items you will find on Link3 are configured as NFTs, which authors can choose to sell or giveaway and which users can collect at their leisure. In the “FanClub” section, you can earn FanPoints by performing actions that help improve engagement on-chain and on Twitter, such as creating a post on a linked dApp, following a profile, or collecting an EssenceNFT.

With these points we will eventually be able to redeem tickets valid for Mystery Box and Mini Shard draws. The boxes, containing NFTs of different rarities, can be opened on the platform or sold on Opensea.

Link3 is the beating heart of the CyberConnect protocol. The presence of official profiles of the industry’s top-rated companies, live events, and tokenization of content and engagement makes it a more than viable decentralized social network. Join the FanClub and start interacting with the most promising social profiles and dApps on the web3.

Conclusions

The ecosystem of decentralized applications created by CyberConnect extends its boundaries to all areas of art and entertainment. It ranges from the Read-Fi of ReadON to watch-to-earn on REVO, from the irreverent GameFi of Degenreborn to the songs of independent artists on CyberTune, via the gamer and creator communities of GamicHQ and W3Space.

If the number of developers and new applications is a symptom of the health of a protocol, we can say that for now CyberConnect is doing very well. With a token (CYBER) on the way, when (as we hope) users on web3 increase, this ecosystem will enjoy a strong advantage over its competitors.

If you are looking for a decentralized social network that is active on the major networks of the growing crypto landscape, CyberConnect is definitely one of the best choices.
