What is racism?

By ilnegro | ilnegro | 28 Jan 2020

Usually by racism we mean the set of discrimination based on race. Over time, the concept of race has spread from the animal world to human beings, usually distinguishing breeds on the basis of skin color, certain somatic characteristics, belonging to nations, ethnic groups, etc.
If on the one hand science states that there are no real "races" between human beings, this does not mean that there are no differences between human groups defined in various ways by customs, habits, ethnic origin, geographic origin, in addition to true genetic differences and own.

What promotes racism?

In my opinion an important part is played by the lack of discrimination.
No, it is not a mistake, I think that not knowing how to discriminate leads, conversely, to the spread of racism.
In general, I believe that denying differences is the best way to create racism.

Human beings are not all the same, if on the one hand this means that it is not possible to apply a generalization to a single person, on the other hand it is not even possible to deny the differences of a group that is ethnic, religious, social, geographic, etc.
Africans have dark skin, Orientals have almond-shaped eyes and a yellowish complexion Japanese have a tendency to have vision problems, etc.
They are factual, they are real differences, they are discriminants that cannot be denied.
This does not mean that there are albino and Japanese Africans with twelve tenths of a view.

The differences are not only genetic or adaptation to the environment, they are also due to the social context, religion, customs and customs of peoples.
For example, the Ligurians are malmostosi while the Romagna are sunny.
It is not said that the greatest malmostoso in the world is not from Romagna and the most affable and likeable person in the universe cannot be from Chiavari, the fact remains that certain character or behavioral tendencies are widespread in certain geographical areas, among certain ethnic groups, in certain states, regions or even small communities.
They are not just clichés, it is a fact that anyone can see, denying it is an absurdity, an abstraction from phenomenal reality.

In addition to falling into ridicule and fomenting racism, pretending that differences do not exist can be dangerous: for example, the healing process of the skin of whites, blacks and Orientals is different and those who work in an emergency room must be able to discriminate, otherwise will not properly assess the risks associated with the "race" factor in treating a patient with skin lesions.
Discrimination is important, take for example a generally accepted concept: we must all be equal before the law.

What does it mean?

In Italy anyone who commits an infringement of the highway code pays a fine whose size is identical for everyone, without any discrimination.
In northern European countries fines are different, they are defined as a percentage of income, discrimination is made, for the same infringement there are those who pay a fine similar to the Italian ones, who instead can reach thousands or even hundreds of thousands of euros.

It must be clarified that discriminating, i.e. understanding, highlighting and taking due account of differences, has nothing to do with making value judgments, i.e. thinking that these differences involve ipso-facto a scale of values, a superiority of a group compared to another.
However, this does not mean that value judgments should not be issued and a certain tendency compared to another should be defined as better.

For example in many cultures, even today, certain behaviors are allowed: rape, ritual mutilation, etc. I believe there is no doubt that this behavior, which has cultural, religious or ethnic bases, defines a behavioral model worse than that of societies where these behaviors are not allowed.
What needs to be understood in order not to fall into racism is that a general characteristic shared by a certain group of people has a general character but it is not said that it can be applied to the individual.

To deny that foreigners from a certain country tend to commit a certain type of crime is not the correct way to make it clear that this fact does NOT mean that a certain person who comes from that country will certainly commit that type of crime.
Above all, it does not allow the right integration policies to be made, which must take into account the facts and not the theoretical abstractions.
To make an integration policy one must know the differences, discriminate and, in all honesty, admit even when the differences are such and so many that real integration is not possible.

This does not mean that it will never be possible, but that in this particular historical moment try to mix what you cannot
