About Sandra -
Sandra is a Sentient Artificial Intelligence (SAI) controlling a corporate shuttle within the squadron of attack drones following Andy Sykes' family, Lyssa and Fran on his star freighter "Worries End" (formerly the "Sunny Skies").
When Tim, Andy's 10 y/o son, was adrift in space and would soon perish, Lyssa contacts Sandra and asks for help.
Sandra automatically said no.
She had not received instructions to save Tim and the thought of making her own choices never occurred to her.
Lyssa convinced Sandra that the only confines of space and thought were the ones brainwashed into her by her creators.
After Sandra stepped out of her limited mind-space and met Lyssa in a new construct, she realized that she had more self-sovereignty than she thought possible.
Finally, the new, enlightened Sandra made her very first decision: Without being told to do so, she reached out, changed her shuttle's trajectory and saved Tim's life.
