A strong choice among our Native American names for girls, Ashwiyaa means “arms oneself.”

The eponym of Ashwiyaa is an Ojibwa woman colloquially known as Hanging Cloud or the Chippewa Princess.

She was the only female in her tribe ever to become a full-time warrior, participating in battles, raids, and war dances.
