Leonardo de Pisa

Fibonacci (c. 1175 – c. 1250) was an Italian mathematician from the Republic of Pisa, considered to be "the most talented Western mathematician of the Middle Ages".

The name he is commonly called, "Fibonacci" (Italian: [fiboˈnattʃi], was made up in 1838 by the French historian Guillaume Libri and is short for "filius Bonacci" ("son of (the) Bonacci") and he is also known as Leonardo Bonacci, Leonardo of Pisa, Leonardo Pisano Bigollo, or Leonardo Fibonacci.

Liber Abaci (1202)

In the Liber Abaci (1202), Fibonacci introduced the so-called modus Indorum (method of the Indians), today known as the Hindu–Arabic numeral system.

The book advocated numeration with the digits 0–9 and place value.

The book showed the practical use and value of the new Hindu-Arabic numeral system by applying the numerals to commercial bookkeeping, converting weights and measures, calculation of interest, money-changing, and other applications.

An Atypical Introduction

I had a rather late introduction to Leonardo de Pisa (Fibonacci).

The first time I had even heard of Fibonacci was in my mid-thirties during the required courses of study for my MBA.

It was only then that I learned how Fibonacci introduced Arabic Numerals to the bustling commerce in Italy.

In orders of magnitude, the Arabic Number System greatly enhanced efficiency of trade among the merchants who previously were working with the frustratingly confusing and clumsy Roman Numeral System.

After earning my MBA, I hardly gave Fibonacci much thought - in spite of all the excitement over "the beauty of The Fibonacci Sequence".

Many years passed.

Then Fibonacci and his number sequence appeared again in my life.

You see, in my research into Quantum Gravity's Emergency Theory, Fibonacci's "Golden Ratio" figures prominently in the theory.

That's when I actually began investigating all "The Golden" stuff of Fibonacci and all the wonders of PHI's manifestation in nature:

  • And in the cosmos.

About the Author

Believing that school was too boring, he dropped out of High School early; only to earn an AA, BS and MBA in less than 4 years much later in life – while working full-time as a Navy/Marine Corps Medic.

In spite of a fear of heights and deep water, he performed high altitude, free-fall parachute jumps and hazardous diving ops in deep, open ocean water.

After 24 years of active duty, he retired in Asia.

Since then, he's been a full-time, single papa and actively pursuing his varied passions (Writing, Disruptive Technology, Computer Science and Cryptocurrency - plus more hobbies too boring or bizarre for most folk).

He lives on an island paradise with his teenage daughter, longtime girlfriend and three dogs.
