Genesis 44:30-34

from "Joseph" the movie.

Today, we are finishing chapter 44 and will start another next week, where Joseph can no longer control himself, having missed his brothers for so many years. We will see the big reveal in next week's post.

We are hearing the last bit of recapping of the story thus far by Joseph's brother as he explains their father's grief, to befall him, if Benjamin is held as a prisoner and not allowed to return with them to Jacob.

I again mention how much of the Hebrew that I have read tends to reword things and add detail, starting at Genesis with the creation story and the same kind of thing occurs over and over in many texts. That part of this story ends with this chapter and a new one begins next week. Joseph has been testing his brothers up until now to see if they have changed. If they have had enough of their guilt for enslaving him while at the same time, becoming the one that they would bow down to in the dream Joseph had as a child.

God knew al that would transpire in the life of Joseph and he had a plan to save all of Israel from a terrible famine before they even knew they would need that saving. The same is true related to anonenu Yeshua ben David (our master Jesus, son of David) who was jailed and tortured before we even knew we needed a way to be reconciled to YHVH in the first place.

The parallels are very strong at this point in our readings.

Today's reading

English

"Now therefore, as soon as I come to your servant my father, and the boy is not with us, then, as his life is bound up in the boy's life, as soon as he sees that the boy is not with us, he will die, and your servants will bring down the gray hairs of your servant our father with sorrow to Sheol. For your servant became a pledge of safety for the boy to my father, saying, 'If I do not bring him back to you, then I shall bear the blame before my father all my life.' Now therefore, please let your servant remain instead of the boy as a servant to my lord, and let the boy go back with his brothers. For how can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? I fear to see the evil that would find my father."
