While reviewing "The Telegraph," an article on Facebook's 71 gender options for the UK users came to my attention. It is incredible that any respectable news organization would act as an enabler for a mental health condition. The DSM5 defines Gender dysphoria: it involves a conflict between a person's physical or assigned gender and the gender with which he/she/they identify. An important word in this definition is Identify. The list of 71 genders is nonsense
The list of genders on Facebook boils down to two genders. Many are repeats of the two established genders. The list is long and redundant. Here is a sampling from the list to make the point. Female to Male, F2M, Trans man, Trans male; these four genders are the same thing. They are referring to a woman in transition to being a man. She is still biologically female. No matter the surgeries or hormones replacement therapies. If she stops taking male hormones, she will revert to her natural form of a female.
Another part of the list is equally misleading "Trans*person and Trans person." Neither of these are a gender. Merely putting an asterisk in the name does not create a new gender. Gender Neutral and Gender Neutrois mean the same thing. Neutrois is a new word created by the Trans community.
The term Cisgender in FB accounts five genders: Cisgender, Cisgender Female, Cisgender Male, Cisgender Man, Cisgender Woman. The abbreviated form of Cisgender is Cis and accounts for five more entries on the list.
So far the list of genders has been reduced by 14. The androgynous entries are not genders. They are the appearance of no gender. Whether it is done by Klienfetters syndrome or through other means such as surgery and hormone blockers the underlying biology will be male or female. Intersex does refer to those born with Klienfetters Syndrome having an extra X or Y chromosome. Many of these people will present as either male or female. It is not a true gender.
We will now look at the Pan/Poly Gender persons. Pan is the root word meaning universal. Such as Pandemic disease; a disease that is in the entire population. Poly means many. A poly gender person feels like they are many genders — usually, more than three as there are specific terms for two and three gendered persons. The Pangender designation means they feel like all genders at the same time. It is not likely that a person will feel like a man and a woman at some time. So this and Polygender are both nonsense.
Looking at the rest of the list it is clear there are only two specific genders; Male and Female. If we look at this list from a different perspective, we can see it encompasses many sexual orientations, which is as diverse as all of the people on the planet.
Some of the entries are sexual orientations; such as Genderqueer. Healthline.com defines it as : "Genderqueer is a gender identity that’s built around the term “queer.” To be queer is to exist in a way that may not align with heterosexual or homosexual norms. Although it’s typically used to describe a person’s sexual orientation." Someone that does not fit into any of the preconceived notions of sexuality. This term is not a gender designation; it is a broad definition of a person's sexuality.
As seen above all of the made-up gender terms resolve back to the two genders that are chromosomal determined. Gender does not change because a person wishes their gender to change. Hormones and surgery will give a facade of the other gender, but they will not change a person's gender.
Gender dysphoria is a real medical condition, and it has to be taken seriously by everyone. We can not fall into the trap of enabling the delusion of multiple genders beyond the two biologically determined genders.
