Today I want to tell you about a discussion I had the opportunity to witness while we were waiting for the professor during my recent exam: a guy was animatedly stating that we consume too much paper and we have to change to other alternatives, even for toilet paper it should be replaced by the washable one.
He was so taken that he didn't even notice the face that almost everyone in the room had: are you stupid?
And although I may also partially agree that we are consuming a lot of paper (it being one of the resources with minimal environmental impact, especially the one obtained from FSC responsible forests), how can you say that washable toilet paper is the solution? Maybe it could be for the kitchen, when we make a mess it could replace rolls... but not in the bathroom.
Toilet paper is called hygienic because it is used for personal hygiene, not because it is sterile. Considering the environmental impact, on average a human being would use 3 trees during his entire life to clean himself, using the washable one would have a greater environmental impact (besides being disgusting):
- can not be put with dirty clothes after use, risk of contamination
- it should be washed immediately with strong sanitizing agents such as bleach (polluting agent) and I doubt that anyone would do it with joy
- the amount of water used to wash the fabric separately, all the way down would be a waste
- you would save us for a month and then see the bills increas
- if not sanitized well bacteria could grow and contaminate YOU
So do yourself a favor and keep using normal toilet paper, if you are concerned about the environmental impact then make an effort and choose the FSC certified one.
That said, see you next time. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
