Avenir
Designed by Swiss typographer Adrian Frutiger, Avenir is a linear typeface that was published by the Mergenthaler Linotype Foundry, in 1988. Having grown up in an artisanal context, Frutiger designed characters using paper proofs and scissors, instead of using only digital tools.
After having perfected sans serif fonts, such as Frutiger and Universe, he wanted Avenir to be nothing less than a clear and simple representation modern typographic trends. Despite that it be inspired by Futura, one of the first geometric fonts, Avenir is not just geometric, because it contains style elements humanist.

At the time of its publication, Avenir contained three weights each with an oblique. Subsequently, six weights were added. In 2004, Avenir Next, an optimized version for digital use, was created. This update, by Akira Kobayashi in collaboration with Adrian Frutiger, includes small caps, ligatures, cursive italics rather than oblique italics, and several condensed fats, making a total of 24 fats.
Nowadays, Avenir is used, among others, in the Apple Maps application, Snapchat and in the city's graphic charter from Amsterdam to the Netherlands.
