Some boxing careers end with a final bell. Zolani Tete's ended with something far more shocking.
The former two-division world champion was shot dead outside his home in Mdantsane, South Africa, at the age of 38. Police said he was arriving at his residence when two armed men wearing face coverings got out of another vehicle and opened fire. A 27-year-old woman travelling with him was also wounded and taken to hospital.
The killing has stunned South African boxing because Tete was not simply a former titleholder. He was one of the country's most accomplished fighters of his generation, a boxer who had travelled the world, won major belts and produced one of the fastest finishes ever seen in a world championship bout.
And there was another twist to his story: after years away from competition, Tete had only recently become eligible to return to boxing.

A fighter built in Mdantsane
Zolani Tete grew up in Mdantsane, an Eastern Cape township with a deep boxing tradition. His professional career began in 2006, and he gradually moved through several weight classes while developing a reputation as a dangerous southpaw with serious punching power.
His early career was not simply a straight climb to the top. Tete experienced setbacks, travelled widely for fights and spent years building himself into an international contender.
The breakthrough came in Japan in July 2014.
Tete defeated Teiru Kinoshita by unanimous decision in Kobe to win the vacant IBF junior-bantamweight world title. It was the kind of victory that changed the scale of his career. He was no longer merely a promising South African fighter; he was a world champion.
He successfully defended the belt against Paul Butler before eventually moving on from the division.
That decision would prove important because Tete was still searching for another major opportunity.

The night he needed only 11 seconds
The defining highlight of Tete's career came in Belfast in November 2017.
He faced fellow South African Siboniso Gonya with the WBO bantamweight title at stake. Most world championship fights are long, tactical affairs. This one barely had time to begin.
Tete stopped Gonya in 11 seconds, producing a finish that became internationally famous and is recorded as the fastest stoppage in a world title fight.
It was more than a spectacular statistic.
The knockout became a snapshot of what made Tete dangerous. His height and reach were unusual for the lighter divisions, while his southpaw stance created problems for opponents. When the opening appeared, he could turn a fight into a matter of seconds.
Tete then built on that moment.
In 2018, he defended the WBO bantamweight championship against former champion Omar Narváez and later beat Mikhail Aloyan on points. Those wins showed that the Belfast knockout had not been a one-night accident. Tete could also manage twelve-round championship fights against experienced opponents.
His WBO reign ended in November 2019 when John Riel Casimero stopped him in the third round.
For many fighters, that could have been the beginning of the final chapter.
For Tete, it wasn't.

A comeback interrupted by controversy
Tete returned to the ring in 2021 and defeated Iddi Kayumba inside one round.
In July 2022, he faced Jason Cunningham at Wembley. Tete initially appeared to have delivered another impressive statement, stopping Cunningham in the fourth round.
But the result was later changed to a no contest following a failed drug test. The incident led to a four-year ban imposed by UK Anti-Doping. Tete maintained that he had not knowingly taken the prohibited substance.
That suspension became one of the most complicated parts of his later career.
Four years is a long time for any athlete, and especially for a boxer. While Tete remained away from competition, boxing continued to move forward without him.
Yet he did not completely abandon the idea of returning.
The suspension expired on July 29, 2026, according to reports published before his death. After that point, the possibility of a comeback was no longer theoretical. Tete was again eligible to compete, and reports indicated that he had been preparing for a return.
Then, less than a month later, his life was violently cut short.

What happened outside his home?
The attack took place in Mdantsane as Tete arrived at his residence.
Police said two armed men wearing balaclavas approached in another vehicle and opened fire. Tete attempted to get into his property but died from his injuries at the scene. The woman travelling with him survived the shooting but suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was hospitalized.
The most important unanswered question is the motive.
At this stage, there is no verified public explanation establishing why Tete was targeted. South Africa's sports minister also cautioned against speculation.
There has been another important development because conflicting reports circulated online about arrests. South African police later moved to reject claims that suspects had already been apprehended, saying that no one had yet been identified and that the investigation was continuing.
That means the responsible conclusion is simple: the murder investigation remains open.
It would be premature to connect Tete's death to any particular motive or individual without evidence from investigators.

The numbers behind the champion
Tete finished his professional career with a record of 29 wins, 4 losses and 1 no contest, including 22 victories by knockout.
His most important achievements came in two divisions.
First came the IBF junior-bantamweight championship in 2014. Then came the WBO bantamweight title in 2017, the belt he defended successfully against Narváez and Aloyan before losing it to Casimero.
There were also important victories outside those championship runs. Tete defeated Paul Butler, Arthur Villanueva and several other experienced opponents during a career that took him from South Africa to Japan, Mexico, England, Northern Ireland and Russia.
But statistics only explain part of his legacy.
For fans, the 11-second victory over Gonya will probably remain the image most closely associated with his name. For South African boxing, however, his importance goes beyond a single record.
He was a fighter from Mdantsane who reached the world stage and won major championships in two weight classes.
That achievement is not erased by the difficult chapters that followed.

A career that should have had another chapter
Perhaps the most painful part of Tete's death is the timing.
At 38, he was no longer a young prospect. But he had just emerged from a four-year suspension and was reportedly preparing to compete again. His career was entering an unusual second act.
There would have been questions about his form, his conditioning and the level he could still reach after such a long absence.
Those questions will now never be answered.
Instead, boxing is left with the record he built before his comeback attempt: two world championships, 29 professional victories, 22 knockouts and a world-title stoppage that lasted only 11 seconds.
His death also raises a broader question about how quickly a sporting story can change. One day, the conversation is about training, comeback plans and the possibility of another fight. The next, the athlete is remembered through tributes and old footage.
The investigation will have to establish what happened, who was responsible and why.
Until that information is confirmed, speculation has no place in the story.
What can be stated with certainty is that Zolani "Last Born" Tete was a two-division world champion whose life was taken violently at 38, just as another chapter of his boxing career appeared ready to begin.
For the boxing world, the final bell came far too soon.
