Serie A Round 4: Roma and Inter Set the Pace as Como and Cagliari Keep Surprising

Roma and Inter remain unbeaten after Round 4 of Serie A 2026/27. Como and Cagliari impress, Juventus lose to Sassuolo

Four rounds into the 2026/27 Serie A season, the early picture is becoming clearer without becoming predictable. Roma and Inter have both collected four wins from four matches, but the teams immediately behind them are making sure the title race does not become a two-team story. Como are already on ten points, Lazio have matched them, and Cagliari have climbed to an impressive nine.
The fourth round produced 39 goals across ten matches and ended with one of the most entertaining games of the young season, as Inter recovered from two goals down to beat Udinese 5-3 at San Siro.
At the other end of the weekend, Roma continued their perfect start with a controlled 2-0 win at Torino. Between those two results came a little bit of everything: a spectacular Milan comeback against Lazio, Cagliari's away victory at Atalanta, Sassuolo's dramatic late win over Juventus and Napoli finally returning to winning ways.

Roma are becoming the team everyone has to chase

Gian Piero Gasperini's Roma have not simply been collecting points. They have been doing it with remarkable defensive consistency.
The 2-0 win at Torino made it four victories in four matches and kept the Giallorossi unbeaten at the top of the table. Donyell Malen opened the scoring in the 40th minute after a move involving Paulo Dybala, while Nicolò Pisilli added the second goal deep into stoppage time.
Malen's contribution has been particularly important. The Dutch forward is now Serie A's leading scorer with six goals, and his combination with Dybala has quickly become one of the most interesting attacking partnerships in the league.
Even more striking is Roma's defensive record. After four rounds, they have scored 12 times and conceded just once. That is the kind of balance that immediately makes a team look serious, although it would still be far too early to turn four matches into a championship prediction.
For now, the more reasonable conclusion is that Roma have started the season with a clear identity and a remarkable level of consistency.

Inter show their resilience in an eight-goal thriller

Inter's 5-3 victory over Udinese was a very different kind of statement.
The defending champions looked vulnerable during the opening twenty minutes, when Abankwah and Jurgen Ekkelenkamp put Udinese 2-0 ahead. Instead of losing control, however, Cristian Chivu's side gradually turned the game around.
Carlos Augusto pulled one back in the 26th minute, Nicolò Barella equalised nine minutes later and Marcus Thuram put Inter ahead shortly after half-time. Francesco Pio Esposito then made it 4-2 before Ange-Yoan Bonny added a fifth.
Udinese scored again through Idrissa Gueye in stoppage time, but by then the game had already slipped away from the visitors.
The victory means Inter have also won all four league matches and now sit level with Roma on 12 points. With 13 goals, they have the most prolific attack in the division.
The most encouraging part for Inter may actually be the reaction rather than the final score. Going two goals behind and still finding a way to dominate the second half showed the kind of mentality expected from the reigning champions.

Como and Cagliari are changing the early conversation

One of the most fascinating developments of the first month is the presence of Como near the top of the table.
Cesc Fàbregas' team defeated Parma 2-1 at the Sinigaglia, with Ramón scoring in the 23rd minute and Kaiki Bruno adding the second in the 83rd. Romero pulled one back for Parma in stoppage time, but Como held on.
The result leaves Como on ten points after four matches, with three victories and one draw. Considering the club is also dealing with the demands of its first Champions League campaign, that start deserves particular attention.
Cagliari are another team refusing to follow the expected script. Their 2-1 victory away to Atalanta moved them to nine points, only three behind the leaders.
Mendy opened the scoring, Gianluca Scamacca equalised before half-time and Daniel Maldini converted the decisive penalty after the break.
Two losses in a row have left Atalanta on six points, while Cagliari are suddenly sitting in fifth place and looking increasingly difficult to dismiss as an early-season surprise.

Lazio throw away a two-goal lead, but Milan find a response

Lazio and Milan produced one of the most dramatic games of the round.
The home side looked completely in control during the opening 45 minutes. Matteo Cancellieri scored first and Tijjani Noslin doubled the advantage before half-time.
Milan, however, changed completely after the break. Ruben Amorim made three substitutions at half-time, and Diego Moreira immediately became the key figure.
The Portuguese midfielder scored twice in just two minutes, first in the 65th minute and then again in the 67th, bringing Milan level.
The 2-2 draw ended Lazio's perfect run but kept them unbeaten and on ten points. Milan moved to eight points and will take considerable confidence from the way they recovered after a poor first half.
It was a useful reminder that this season's table is already competitive, but the gap between a convincing performance and a disappointing result can still be extremely small.

Juventus stumble, Napoli recover and Fiorentina finally wake up

The most dramatic result of the weekend belonged to Sassuolo, who defeated Juventus 3-2 in a remarkable finish.
The match was goalless for more than an hour before Francesco Pio Esposito put Sassuolo ahead. Juventus appeared to turn the game around through Edon Zhegrova, who scored twice, but Vasilije Adžić produced the decisive goal deep into stoppage time.
Sassuolo moved to seven points, level with Juventus, while the Bianconeri suffered their first defeat of the campaign.
Napoli finally ended their difficult run with a 1-0 victory over Bologna. Stanislav Lobotka scored in the 66th minute, giving Massimiliano Allegri's side an important three points after two consecutive league defeats.
Lecce also collected a valuable home win, beating Monza 3-2 thanks to two goals from Lassana Coulibaly and another from Tiago Gabriel.
The round had started with Fiorentina's first victory of the season, a 4-2 away win at Venezia. Franco Mastantuono was the star of the night with a hat-trick, while Mateo Pellegrino added another goal for the visitors.

The table after Round 4

Roma and Inter remain the only teams with a perfect record. Como and Lazio are just two points behind, while Cagliari are already nine points clear of several teams near the bottom.
At the other end, Venezia remain the only side without a point.

Malen leads the scoring race

Donyell Malen now tops the Serie A scoring chart with six goals, following his strike against Torino.
Antonio Raimondo of Frosinone is second with four, while Lazio's Davide Frattesi and Fiorentina's Franco Mastantuono have three each.
A large group follows on two goals, including several high-profile names from Inter, Como, Napoli, Milan, Fiorentina, Juventus and other clubs.
The race is obviously still in its infancy, but Malen's start has been one of the clearest individual stories of the opening month.

Roma-Inter is already the next big appointment

The fifth round will arrive with an obvious headline: Roma will host Inter on Saturday, September 19 at 18:00.
The two sides are currently level on 12 points, but they have arrived there in different ways. Roma have built their perfect start around defensive reliability, while Inter have combined a perfect record with the league's best attack.
The rest of the fifth-round schedule includes Monza-Sassuolo, Bologna-Torino, Udinese-Cagliari, Venezia-Lazio, Fiorentina-Napoli, Frosinone-Como, Parma-Genoa, Juventus-Atalanta and Milan-Lecce.
The international break that follows makes the Roma-Inter clash even more intriguing. The result will not decide anything in September, but it could provide the first meaningful indication of how the two early leaders compare when they finally face each other.

Four rounds in, and nothing feels settled

That may be the most interesting thing about this Serie A season so far. Roma and Inter are already setting the pace, but Como and Lazio are close enough to keep the pressure on, while Cagliari have inserted themselves into the European conversation.
Juventus have suffered their first setback, Napoli have finally stopped the bleeding, Milan have shown that they can recover from a difficult situation and Atalanta now need to respond after back-to-back defeats.
There is still a huge amount of football to be played, but the first four rounds have already provided enough clues to make the next few weeks genuinely interesting.
And with Roma-Inter coming up, the fifth round could be the moment when the early-season picture starts to take a much more serious shape.
