A few minutes after midnight on September 15, the airspace over Lithuania became the scene of a real NATO air-defence operation.
Two Italian Air Force Eurofighters scrambled from Šiauliai after an unmanned aircraft entered Lithuanian airspace. The drone was intercepted and destroyed, while Lithuanian authorities later recovered its remains and neutralised an explosive device found with the aircraft.
What initially appeared to be a possible Shahed-type drone was later identified by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda as a Gerbera, a Russian-produced unmanned aircraft commonly associated with decoy missions but also capable of carrying explosives.
That distinction matters.
The incident is serious, but the available evidence does not support turning every unanswered question into a definitive conclusion.

A real NATO interception

The Italian fighters were operating as part of NATO's Baltic Air Policing mission, from the Šiauliai air base.
The aircraft belonged to the Italian “Baltic Thunder III” Task Force Air, a deployment involving the Italian Air Force's Eurofighters and led by personnel from the 36th Stormo at Gioia del Colle.
When the unidentified aircraft crossed into Lithuanian airspace, the Italian jets were ordered to scramble.
The response reportedly took place within minutes, with the aircraft intercepting and neutralising the drone in Lithuanian territory.
This is exactly what Air Policing is designed to do: maintain aircraft on alert, detect an unknown or potentially dangerous object and react before the situation develops further.

The Belarus connection

One of the most important findings came from Lithuania's preliminary investigation.
Authorities said the drone appears to have entered Lithuanian territory from the direction of Belarus.
Vilnius subsequently protested to Minsk.
But the direction from which a drone enters a country is not automatically proof of who launched it.
That distinction is essential.
The Lithuanian investigation is intended to establish the aircraft's origin, ownership, route and possible objective.

The Gerbera question

The most interesting development came after the first reports.
Rather than simply being described as a Shahed, the aircraft was identified as a Gerbera by the Lithuanian president.
The Gerbera is a relatively inexpensive Russian unmanned aircraft. It can be used as a decoy to complicate air-defence operations and can also be configured to carry explosives.
In Lithuania, authorities confirmed that the wreckage was associated with an explosive device, which was safely neutralised.
The drone's electronics were also being examined.
That could eventually provide information about its navigation system, intended destination and flight path.

Was Ukraine the intended target?

According to President Nausėda, the most likely explanation is that the drone was heading towards Ukraine rather than deliberately targeting Lithuania.
He also suggested that Ukrainian electronic warfare may have affected the aircraft's route.
That is an important statement, but it remains an assessment rather than a final investigative conclusion.
Until the Lithuanian authorities complete their examination, the precise reason why the drone entered NATO airspace cannot be considered fully established.

Why the Italian role matters

The incident provides a very practical example of Italy's role on NATO's eastern flank.
The Italian deployment is not simply a symbolic presence.
Its Eurofighters are part of an operational air-policing system that requires aircraft to remain ready for immediate action.
The sequence in Lithuania illustrates how the system works: surveillance detects an anomaly, command authorities evaluate the contact, aircraft scramble, pilots intercept the target and the threat is neutralised if required.
It all happened during a single night.

Šiauliai and the NATO command structure

The Italian aircraft operated from Šiauliai, also known as Zokniai Air Base.
The mission is connected to NATO's wider air-command network, including the Combined Air Operations Centre at Uedem in Germany.
That command structure links surveillance, air-traffic information, NATO command authorities and fighter assets.
The Lithuanian incident therefore involved much more than two aircraft taking off from a runway.
It was a coordinated NATO air-defence response.

A significant first

The incident also carries a wider significance.
According to Reuters, this was the first suspected Russian drone shot down by NATO's Baltic Air Defence mission since the Baltic states joined the Alliance in 2004.
That does not mean drones had never entered the region's airspace before.
There have been other incidents involving unmanned aircraft, including cases involving Ukrainian drones and situations in which aircraft were lost or diverted.
What makes this case different is the combination of a NATO airspace violation, a suspected Russian-type drone and the use of NATO fighter aircraft to destroy it over Lithuanian territory.

The diplomatic response

Lithuania also reacted diplomatically.
Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys said the country had delivered a strong protest to Belarus following the preliminary assessment that the drone entered Lithuanian territory from Belarus.
Lithuanian authorities are also conducting a pre-trial investigation.
The purpose is not simply to identify the drone model.
Investigators need to establish what happened before the aircraft entered Lithuania and why its route brought it into NATO airspace.

What we still don't know

Several important questions remain open.
Who launched the drone?
Where exactly did its mission begin?
Was it deliberately programmed to fly towards Ukraine?
Was its course altered by electronic warfare?
Was the Lithuanian airspace violation accidental?
And what information can be recovered from the drone's electronic components?
At this stage, those questions should remain questions.
The evidence already available is enough to establish that the drone entered Lithuanian airspace and was destroyed by Italian Eurofighters.
It is not enough to turn every theory surrounding the incident into an established fact.

The bigger Baltic picture

The incident comes against a backdrop of growing concern over drones operating close to NATO's eastern borders.
Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia occupy a particularly sensitive position between Russia, Belarus and the wider Baltic region.
For NATO, the challenge is not only detecting conventional aircraft.
Small unmanned systems can be cheaper, harder to classify and capable of appearing suddenly in areas where air-defence decisions have to be made within seconds.
That makes incidents like the Lithuanian shoot-down particularly significant.

Italy's mission is not over

The Italian Eurofighters remain part of NATO's Baltic air-policing framework.
The episode in Lithuania demonstrated why such deployments require aircraft, pilots, ground crews, surveillance systems and command centres to remain ready even when no conventional military aircraft is approaching.
The incident lasted minutes.
The investigation will take much longer.
And that investigation will ultimately determine whether the drone's route was simply the result of a technical or electronic deviation, or whether there was something more deliberate behind its presence over Lithuania.
For now, the most solid conclusion is also the simplest: a potentially explosive unmanned aircraft entered NATO airspace, two Italian Eurofighters were scrambled and the threat was neutralised.
The unanswered questions are now in the hands of the investigators.
