DHL is bringing wind-powered cargo ships back to the Atlantic. Discover how this innovative partnership could reshape sustain

DHL Bets on Wind-Powered Cargo Ships to Cut Atlantic Emissions

The future of global shipping might look surprisingly familiar: giant sails crossing the Atlantic. But this isn't a return to the past—it's a high-tech strategy aimed at reducing carbon emissions while keeping international trade moving.
DHL Global Forwarding France has announced a partnership with French startup VELA to introduce a new generation of wind-powered cargo vessels connecting Europe and the United States. The project is part of a broader effort to make international logistics more sustainable without relying entirely on conventional fossil-fuel-powered ships.

A Different Kind of Cargo Ship
Unlike traditional container vessels, VELA's ships are designed as large sailing trimarans that use wind as their primary source of propulsion. Solar panels provide electricity for onboard systems, while modern navigation technology helps optimize routes according to weather and wind conditions.
The idea isn't simply to build another eco-friendly vessel. Instead, the goal is to create a practical shipping option capable of significantly lowering greenhouse gas emissions on one of the world's busiest trade routes.
According to the companies involved, the new service could reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 90% compared with conventional ocean freight, while emissions may be reduced by up to 99% compared with air freight, depending on the shipment profile and route.

When Will Service Begin?
Commercial operations are expected to begin in early 2027.
The first scheduled route will connect Caen-Ouistreham in Normandy, France, with New Haven, Connecticut, creating a dedicated transatlantic corridor for low-emission freight.
Initially, the ships will carry products that benefit from environmentally responsible transport rather than ultra-fast delivery. These include pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, luxury goods, wine, spirits, and aerospace components.

Faster? Not Really.
One common misconception is that sail-powered ships will outperform today's cargo vessels.
That isn't the objective.
A crossing is expected to take around 15 days, which is longer than many conventional container services operating on similar Atlantic routes.
The advantage lies elsewhere: dramatically lower fuel consumption and a much smaller environmental footprint. For companies with ambitious sustainability targets, accepting slightly longer delivery times could become a worthwhile trade-off.

Why This Matters
Global shipping is responsible for moving around 90% of world trade by volume, making it one of the most important pillars of the global economy.
At the same time, the maritime industry faces increasing pressure to reduce emissions as governments tighten environmental regulations and customers demand greener supply chains.
Rather than replacing conventional shipping, projects like DHL and VELA's partnership demonstrate how alternative technologies may complement existing logistics networks.

Could Wind Return to Global Trade?
Wind-assisted shipping has been attracting growing attention across the maritime industry. Several companies are experimenting with sails, rotor systems, hybrid propulsion, and alternative fuels to lower operating costs and reduce emissions.
Whether wind-powered cargo vessels become a mainstream solution remains to be seen. Their success will depend on operational reliability, commercial demand, and long-term economic viability.
Even so, DHL's investment signals that sustainability is becoming a central factor in logistics decisions—not just a marketing message.
As businesses seek cleaner supply chains, wind-powered cargo may evolve from a niche innovation into an increasingly common option for transatlantic trade.

Would you choose a greener shipping option if it meant waiting a few extra days for delivery?
