In 2025, Italy’s beach season is marked by sharp increases in the cost of sun umbrellas and loungers at beach resorts. The so-called "umbrella price hike" phenomenon is strongly felt across many tourist destinations, with prices reaching prohibitive levels, especially at exclusive resorts. This trend has generated widespread dissatisfaction among consumers who complain about unjustified price increases amid growing economic hardship. Several Italian celebrities and public figures have also openly criticized this situation.

Over recent years, the average national price for an umbrella with two loungers ranges between 32 and 35 euros per day during weekends. Compared to 2024, this reflects an average increase of 6 percent. Over the past three years, the cumulative increase exceeds 10 percent. Sicily stands out with a 6 percent increase, while Sardinia, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, and Liguria have seen rises around 3 to 4 percent.

Luxury resorts show even more striking price surges. For example, in Versilia, the famous Twiga Beach Club charges up to 1,500 euros per day for an "imperial" tent that accommodates up to ten people. Forte dei Marmi charges about 560 euros per day for comfortable beach setups, and in Costa Smeralda, Nikki Beach charges around 550 euros daily, often including dining credits.

On the social side, complaints abound. Consumers, especially families, report these costs as almost unaffordable, worsening the issue of the high cost of living and rising poverty. Many claim they must forgo beach holidays or turn to cheaper but often less comfortable options. Dissatisfaction is highly visible on social media, where many share stories of exorbitant price hikes during economically challenging times.

Several Italian celebrities and influencers have publicly condemned these price surges. Using their platforms, they highlight how the sea risks becoming a privilege for the few, an exclusive luxury that excludes most people.

On the other hand, beach operators argue that rising prices are partly due to increased management costs, including energy, staffing, and maintenance. They also cite a significant decline in visitors compared to previous years, especially on weekdays and off-season. This decline forces them to raise prices to maintain service quality, creating a paradox: higher prices but fewer customers.

The overall picture is one of increasing poverty, where many families must cut back even on traditional leisure activities like beach days. Meanwhile, instead of lowering prices to attract visitors, many operators continue to raise fees, reinforcing social divides and limiting beach access for the broader public.
