The UEFA Conference League's third league-phase matchday delivered an entertaining night of European football, with eighteen matches producing several important results and a growing number of contenders emerging near the top of the standings.
Ajax produced the most remarkable performance of the round, scoring six goals against Midtjylland in Denmark. The Dutch side recovered from a competitive first half to secure a convincing 6-1 victory, with Tolu Arokodare scoring twice.
Lugano also continued their excellent campaign, defeating Kauno Žalgiris 3-0 to maintain their perfect record. Panathinaikos, Twente and Monaco joined the Swiss club on nine points after collecting their third consecutive victories.
For Italian football, however, the main talking point was Atalanta's disappointing 1-1 draw against Kairat Almaty.
Maurizio Sarri's team were expected to take all three points at home, but the visitors caused considerable problems and even took the lead in the second half. Nikola Krstović eventually rescued a point for the Bergamo side, who now have four points from three matches.
Brighton strengthened their position with a narrow win away to Getafe, while Freiburg secured an important victory against Trabzonspor. Lincoln Red Imps also attracted attention after defeating Hajduk Split in one of the biggest surprises of the evening.
With three rounds remaining, the league-phase standings are becoming increasingly competitive.
Atalanta held by Kairat as Krstović rescues a late point
Atalanta missed an important opportunity to improve their European position after drawing 1-1 with Kairat Almaty at the Stadio di Bergamo.
The Italian side controlled much of the possession and attempted to impose their attacking style from the opening minutes. However, they struggled to convert their territorial advantage into clear scoring opportunities.
Mario Pašalić came close during the first half, while other attacking moves failed to produce the breakthrough.
Kairat approached the match with a disciplined defensive structure and looked particularly dangerous when recovering possession and moving quickly into counterattacks.
Their approach eventually produced the opening goal.
In the 53rd minute, Edmilson played a searching pass forward, allowing Marc Gual to break through the Atalanta defence and beat goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi.
The goal put the visitors in front and increased the pressure on the home side.
Atalanta responded by committing more players forward, but Kairat continued to defend with determination.
The equaliser finally arrived in the 82nd minute.
Following a corner and a knockdown by Obrić, Nikola Krstović reacted quickly inside the penalty area and finished from close range.
Atalanta pushed for a winner during the closing stages, with Pašalić missing a late opportunity in stoppage time.
The match therefore ended 1-1, leaving both teams with a single point.
For Atalanta, the result represents a missed opportunity rather than a complete setback. The club have collected four points from their opening three fixtures, with one victory, one draw and one defeat.
Their position is currently 16th in the standings.
That position would be sufficient to reach the knockout play-offs, but it is below the direct qualification places reserved for the top eight teams.
The next match against Borac Banja Luka will therefore carry considerable importance.
Atalanta need to rediscover the consistency they showed during their opening victory against Pafos.
Ajax deliver a six-goal performance against Midtjylland
Ajax produced the most impressive result of Matchday Three, defeating Midtjylland 6-1 away from home.
The Amsterdam club started aggressively and took the lead in the ninth minute through Tolu Arokodare.
Midtjylland responded through Friday Etim in the 28th minute, restoring parity and giving the home supporters hope of a positive result.
The decisive moment came shortly before half-time.
Midtjylland midfielder Kjell-Arik Wätjen received a red card in the 43rd minute, forcing the Danish side to play the remainder of the match with ten men.
The teams reached the interval with the score at 1-1, but Ajax took complete control after the restart.
Arokodare scored again in the 52nd minute, putting the visitors ahead for the second time.
Owen Wijndal extended the advantage seven minutes later, before Davy Klaassen made it 4-1 in the 67th minute.
The Dutch side continued attacking and added two further goals.
Oscar Gloukh scored in the 74th minute, while Marcos Leonardo completed the 6-1 victory in the 82nd minute.
The result gives Ajax six points from three matches.
Their campaign began with a defeat against Hajduk Split, but consecutive victories against Atalanta and Midtjylland have significantly improved their position.
The next fixture against Thun offers another opportunity to move closer to the leading teams.
Lugano maintain their perfect record
Lugano continue to be one of the most interesting teams in this season's competition.
The Swiss club defeated Kauno Žalgiris 3-0, collecting their third consecutive victory and remaining at the top of the standings.
Cimignani opened the scoring in the 11th minute.
Alioski doubled the advantage in the 24th minute, before Daniel Dos Santos completed the scoring eight minutes later.
The match was effectively decided before half-time.
Lugano now have nine points from three matches, with eleven goals scored and four conceded.
Their attacking numbers are particularly impressive and underline the quality of their start to the campaign.
The Swiss side are not alone at the top, however.
Panathinaikos, Twente and Monaco have also collected maximum points.
The battle for the leading positions is therefore developing into an interesting contest involving four teams.
Panathinaikos and Monaco continue their winning runs
Panathinaikos maintained their perfect record with a 2-1 victory against CSKA Sofia.
The Greek side took the lead through former AC Milan captain Davide Calabria in the 41st minute.
CSKA Sofia responded almost immediately, with Almeida equalising two minutes later.
The match remained competitive until the second half, when Taborda scored the decisive goal in the 68th minute.
The victory takes Panathinaikos to nine points, keeping them alongside Lugano, Twente and Monaco.
Monaco also secured an important home victory, defeating Nordsjælland 2-0.
After a relatively quiet first half, Mathys Detourbet opened the scoring following excellent work from Takumi Minamino.
The French side continued to control the game and eventually secured the result through Matthis Abline, who completed a long counterattacking move in the closing stages.
Monaco have now won all three of their opening fixtures.
Brighton defeat Getafe and remain unbeaten
Brighton collected a valuable away victory against Getafe, winning 1-0 in Spain.
The English side had to work hard to break down a determined home defence.
Getafe started positively, but Brighton gradually created the more dangerous opportunities.
Jaouen Hadjam came close twice, striking the woodwork on both occasions.
The decisive goal arrived in the 64th minute.
Costinha provided the delivery across the penalty area, and Malick Yalcouyé headed the ball into the net to give Brighton the lead.
The visitors successfully protected their advantage until the final whistle.
The victory takes Brighton to seven points after three matches.
They remain unbeaten and currently occupy fifth position in the league-phase standings.
Freiburg win in Turkey as Trabzonspor suffer another setback
Freiburg secured a narrow but important 1-0 victory away to Trabzonspor.
The decisive goal arrived in the 14th minute.
Following a corner, goalkeeper André Onana initially saved Igor Matanović's header, but Lukas Kübler reacted quickly to convert the rebound.
Trabzonspor attempted to respond, with Ernest Muçi and Mohamed Salah among the players looking for an equaliser.
Salah had opportunities before and after half-time, but Freiburg goalkeeper Mio Backhaus prevented him from scoring.
The German side defended their advantage effectively and secured three important points.
The result moves Freiburg to six points, while Trabzonspor remain on the same total.
Despite headlines suggesting that Salah had suffered an injury, the official match report does not confirm a physical setback. The Egyptian captain featured during the game and had attempts on goal.
Lincoln Red Imps produce one of the surprises of the round
Lincoln Red Imps secured a memorable 1-0 victory against Hajduk Split.
The match appeared to be heading towards a goalless draw, but the decisive moment arrived in the 89th minute.
An unfortunate own goal by Hadžikadunić gave the Gibraltar side all three points.
Mjällby also secured an important victory, defeating Borac Banja Luka 2-0.
Bergström opened the scoring in the 54th minute, while Enggård confirmed the result shortly before full-time.
Thun recorded their first win of the league phase by beating Hearts 3-1.
Crvena Zvezda recovered from a disadvantage to defeat Inter Escaldes 2-1.
Arellano initially gave the Andorran side the lead, but Lučić equalised before a late own goal completed the Serbian club's comeback.
Universitatea Craiova defeated Egnatia 2-0, with Cicâldău and Bancu scoring the goals.
Twente also collected three points, beating Pafos 3-1 after recovering from an early disadvantage.
Copenhagen defeated Iberia Tbilisi 2-1, while Sint-Truidense and Brann shared the points in a 1-1 draw.
Riga and Jablonec also finished 1-1.
The remaining two fixtures, Aarhus against Braga and KuPS against Gent, ended goalless.

Understanding the qualification picture
The 2026-27 Conference League uses a 36-team league phase.
Each club plays six different opponents, with three home fixtures and three away matches.
The qualification system is straightforward:
The top eight teams advance directly to the round of 16.
Clubs finishing between ninth and 24th enter the knockout phase play-offs.
Teams finishing between 25th and 36th are eliminated from European competition.
Atalanta currently occupy 16th position.
This means the Italian club remain inside the qualification places, but would need to play the additional knockout play-off round if the standings remained unchanged.
The objective must be to move closer to the top eight.
Ajax, meanwhile, have improved their position considerably after their two consecutive victories.
The four teams at the top have created an interesting early contest, but the remaining fixtures leave plenty of room for movement.
Atalanta face Borac Banja Luka in an important away fixture
The fourth matchday will take place on 26 November 2026.
Atalanta will travel to Bosnia and Herzegovina to face Borac Banja Luka.
The Italian club need a positive result after collecting only one point from their last two league-phase matches.
Borac have three points after three games, meaning Atalanta will have an opportunity to make up ground against a direct competitor.
The main challenge for Sarri's side will be improving their attacking effectiveness.
Against Kairat, Atalanta had possession and created opportunities, but they struggled to turn their territorial advantage into goals.
The next match will therefore require greater precision and better management of the defensive transitions.
A victory could provide an important boost ahead of the final two rounds.

For Atalanta, the trip to Borac could prove particularly important.
A competitive European campaign with plenty still to decide
Three rounds have provided a first indication of the teams capable of challenging for the leading positions.
Lugano, Panathinaikos, Twente and Monaco have made excellent starts, while Brighton have also established themselves as serious contenders.
Ajax have produced the most impressive individual performance of the round, demonstrating their attacking potential with six goals against Midtjylland.
Atalanta, on the other hand, must find a way to turn possession and attacking pressure into more consistent results.
The Bergamo side still have three matches to improve their position, but the next fixture against Borac Banja Luka is becoming increasingly important.
The Conference League remains wide open.
The coming weeks will show whether the current leaders can maintain their advantage and whether Atalanta can recover enough ground to challenge for direct qualification to the last 16.
