Qingdao is a large city with a population of over 9 million located in the Shandong province of China. A major seaport, naval base, and industrial center, Qingdao is also an important economic hub in the area. Qingdao is also home to the Tsingtao brewery, the second largest beer brewery in China!
This coastal city also has a long history, especially through the 20th century. During a colonial period from the late 1890s until Japanese occupation in 1914, Germans left a very distinct mark on the city's architecture that can still be seen today. Japan returned Qingdao to the Chinese government in 1922, but returned and retook the city in 1937, where it remained under Japanese occupation until the end of the Second World War.
