When you think of Cabo I'm sure that mountain climbing is not the first thing that comes to mind. The sun, surf, sand and margaritas is more likely what comes to mind, but there is a mountain there and for the price of a donation you can get a guided view to the top. Now to be completely honest, Mt Solmar is probably more hill than mountain if compared to true mountains like the Rockies but it is a good climb none the less.
Mt Solmar lies just north of the famous arch and has the best view in all of Cabo. From the top you can see both the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific ocean along with a breathtaking view of Lands End, the top of the formation of the famous arch. I have to tell you sitting at the top of Mt Solmar looking out at that ocean and knowing there is no other land between where your standing and Antartica that makes you realize how small you are and how vast the world is.
So how do you go about getting to witness this awesome view? Well its really quite easy ( the getting started, not the climb up). Well you travel past downtown towards the arch to the naval base. Across from there you will see a fenced in area with some dogs running around free. Just show up there a few minutes before 8:30 am and lovely gentleman named Enrique will show up to guide you to the top. Enrique runs a dog shelter there and he does this guided hike daily for donations to his shelter. He's an amazing guy and you will be shocked to see how easily he and his dogs (they climb with you) are able to scamper up the mountain.
The whole climb up and down takes only about an hour and forty five minutes to complete. As someone who frequents cabo often it is kind of a well but no so well known secret if you will. I visited cabo a number of times before I was ever made aware of it and I am so glad I made the climb. If you ever in cabo you should give it a try, you wont regret it.
