Can a trip around Lake Garda in Northern Italy be even more amazing than it has been before? Yes, and this is due to the new cycle path anchored on rocky cliffs right above the Italian lake.
Last summer, the first part of the project worth EUR 102 million was opened. But the entire 140 kilometer circuit, 60 meters above the surface of Lake Garda, will be completely completed in 2021. To the north of Italy, cyclists travel mostly to enjoy driving at the foot of the Dolomites and to participate in traditional Transalp races. At the moment, however, this new bike trail, which has been named "Garda by Bike", will be a new attraction. The 2.6-meter trail runs along the entire lake.
The massive steel structure is drilled through the cliffs and supports the entire path. There are also wooden floors and iron fences in the style of futuristic balconies overlooking the peaks of the surrounding mountains, boats passing by and the picturesque villages that are close to Lake Garda. Designers say that visitors to the trail will enjoy the stunning scenery of the Guard as never before.
"We have reduced the environmental impact by optimizing the balance of design and safety needs while preserving the natural environment of cliffs and shrubs," revealed CNN, Antonio Lotti, chief engineer of Studio Fontana and Lotti-Lorenzi. As the road is already half-built, the first section was opened last year, about five kilometers from Limone Sul Garda. Parts located directly above the lake are associated with more demanding stretches that rise to steeper slopes, but this part can be left out of the boat by boat that travels across the lake at regular intervals.
Pedestrians, not just cyclists who are limited to 10 km / h in pedestrian sections, can also use the route. In the later part of the construction, refreshment stalls and special niches are also included for the best panoramic photos and watching the romantic sunsets. The new cycle path has enormous potential to become one of Italy's most sought-after tourist attractions throughout the year. So far, it has been awarded by the local media as the "most beautiful cycling route in Europe".
