Bakkt, behind the Intecontinental Exchange (ICE) conglomerate, is considering applying for BitLicense in New York.
Bakkt wants to offer on its platform the first Bitcoin Futures traded with real BTCs, but has unexpected problems with licensing from the American Commodity Futures Commission (CFTC).
Since it has not been able to obtain approval so far, according to anonymous sources from the company, it will attempt to obtain a license from the financial regulator in New York, the so-called BitLicense, published by the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS). This could calm the CFTC and ease its concerns when considering the application because of NYDFS
In particular, the CFTC is worried about how Bakkt wants to keep Bitcoins and make sure they are safe.
Bitcoin futures that Bakkt wants to bring are different from those offered by CME and CBOE in that they are directly linked to BTCs and not to US dollar BTCs. In other words, after expiring these contracts, bitcoins and not dollars will be paid out.
In addition, the Bakkt platform also wants to bring products to use cryptocurrency (so far Bitcoin, over and over) as regular currency. For example, it is said that Bakkt could be a mediator for Bitcoin payments for Starbucks coffee.
