Hartmann fue un combatiente en la segunda guerra mundial y posteriormente se convertiría en periodista, las dos guerras mundiales se cobraron la vida de millones de personas, muchas de ellas jóvenes pues eran el grueso de los ejércitos beligerantes, muchos de ellos fueron reclutados a la fuerza o bien con "propaganda y un sentimiento extremadamente nacionalistas por todas partes" se enlistaron sin tener idea realmente del infierno al que iban a ser enviados.
Resulta interesante que la primera guerra mundial comenzara por la tremenda competencia económica y política entre los principales países Europeos y que algunos de sus gobernantes eran parientes (el Kaiser Guillermo como el zar Nicolás eran primos hermanos de Jorge V de Inglaterra - ondacero.es).
