Why not buy Resident Evil Resistance

The 4v1 online PvP game set in the Resident Evil franchise can be played without limitations during this weekend. It's your perfect chance to try it out, because even if its gameplay is actually pretty good and very Resident Evil-ish (if you are considering any Playstation version), you can't actually purchase this game by itself. Although it really does work completely stand-alone, and it is a good game on its own, you can only get it bundled with the Resident Evil 3, which is a crappy, ultra short but pretty re-imagining of the original title.

The paid-for Leon and Claire skins won't be available unless you buy the DLC, but otherwise you have access to everything. Yes, Capcom has actually added paid-for DLC for a game you can't buy stand alone. Like we don't already have enough reason not to buy RE3. All of this means getting RE3 just to play Resistance is futile, because the amount of active players will drop so hard after the promotion has ended, you will be left with a dozen-minutes long queue for every match. Bottomline is: play the game now, but don't buy it.

Why play Resident Evil Resistance

Oh, did you want to hear about the gameplay itself? The game is fun and I would recommend it if not for the reasons I've previously listed. One player acts as the laboratory's host, having captured the other players as mere toys. The host is not within the facility, but watching from a security room, pressing buttons to summon zombies and other creatures, going as far as a Tyrant. Beating an experienced host's strategy can be very daunting.

The rest of the players are people who sought information about Umbrella, but were tricked into following fake clues. They've ended up trapped into the host's facility. Only by fighting many monsters and covering each other's back can they complete the (somewhat simple) puzzles present in each of the three areas during each match. That's the standard template, but although it sounds simplistic, fun is had thanks to the very well done "old school Resident Evil but online multiplayer" feel it gives.
