Unreal Engine 5 Revealed

Decades of gaming on my back have raised my expectations a lot. Surprises are incredibly scarce, but OH MY GOD do I need a PlayStation 5 after seeing this Unreal Engine 5 video demonstration!

Now I'm going to make a bit of commentary on what really took me by surprise in this tech demo, both as someone with some insight into computer and game development logic and as the end-user aka gamer behind the controller.

The gamer inside me is thrilled to the core

There will be a lot more detailed cities and battlegrounds often because of how effortless it is for the devs to include them without scrapping details. This level of detail will be extremely immersive. I mean, what will The Elder Scrolls look like!?

If there's anything that needed an upgrade in games for a long time now, it's waterfalls and aquatic environments in general. Have you noticed how the water waves follow the girl's footsteps? She's pushing her submerged feet forward and it moves just like in real life.

Frantic action was always constrained to smaller rooms due to hardware rendering limitations, specially when it comes to dynamic lighting. Good game design has always hidden this from us, but Tomb Raider games will be seen in a new light thanks to the possibility of high-movement scenes where light sources aren't predefined.

Last but not least: I CANNOT WAIT UNTIL WE CAN PLAY THIS STUFF IN VR! Oh my god, my goal in life at the moment is being able to afford a PS5 and, later on, whatever Oculus Rift gadget can support Unreal Engine 5.
