Alright. Lets get into my journey during the 2020 market crash that was caused by Covid 19.
At the start of the year I was starting to build my portfolio due to being very heavy into crypto. It was never my intention to be heavy into crypto but due to some price appreciation my portfolio had to be rebalanced and my main focus was a traditional stock investment portfolio.
After shutdowns were announce in America many stocks nosedive and cause me to incur over 10k in paper losses. I had less than 30k in investments at the time so seeing my portfolio drop to the around 18k was stressful. At the same time we were going through the global shutdown. My international trip was cancelled and I received a refund for the expenses I made for the planned family trip.
Once I dealt with the refunds and was once again in full focus of my portfolio and with a bit of extra pocket money I began to reconsider my options and my long term investments. As soon as my money got into my robinhood account I bought as much BA stock as I could. My original purchase for BA stock was over $300. As of now my average price is at a healthy $146 and it's currently over $210. My BA shares went from 34 shares to 168. As you can see I went crazy and even activated margin to account for all those purchases.
I now appreciate margin and try to keep my margin below 30% of my portfolio but seeing the buying opportunity I abused margin and bought as much as I could. This margin led me to my one of two regrets when it has come to investing in the market..... I SOLD SOME CRYPTO TO COVER MY MARGIN AND AVOID BEING CALLED ON BY ROBINHOOD.
That's right. A huge mistake and one I still regret. I'm green in my portfolio and have learned from the risk and losses but I can't say it doesn't hurt when I remember that forced sell. While I hate that event I can look back at it now and be grateful that it has sent me towards a different path when it comes to planning for my future. Every paycheck since then has gone into investing as much as possible. It helps when we are advised to stay home and not spend money. I will say I have been grateful enough to work from home so I have been penny pinching and growing my portfolio since the March lows.
I may actually delve deeply into the portfolio at a later date but for now I am trying to highlight events that led me to social arbitrage as a form of investing along with a traditional long term portfolio.
