The inventor of Bitcoin Ordinals, Casey Rodarmor, has proposed a new Bitcoin-based fungible token protocol called Runes.

Runes are designed to address the issues associated with the BRC-20 token standard, particularly its impact on the Bitcoin network.

BRC-20 tokens are fungible tokens that can be minted and transferred via the Ordinals protocol on Bitcoin. However, they have been criticized for spamming Bitcoin with 'junk' Unspent Transaction Outputs (UTXOs). UTXOs represent the amount of cryptocurrency left in a wallet following a completed transaction and play a role in making Bitcoin an auditable and transparent ledger by preventing the double spending problem.

Rodarmor argues that Runes, which are UTXO-based, are a more natural fit for Bitcoin and promote UTXO set minimization by avoiding the creation of 'junk' UTXOs. He believes that the right fungible token protocol can add value to the Bitcoin network by bringing in significant transaction fee revenue, developer mindshare, and users.

While Rodarmor is unsure whether he will pursue the Runes idea further, Trevor Owens, co-host of The Ordinals Show, has offered $100,000 from the Bitcoin Frontier Fund to prospective developers that can create a Rune application to further Rodarmor's proposal.

Could Runes revolutionize Bitcoin?

It is too early to say for sure, but the potential is there. Runes could address a major pain point with Bitcoin's current fungible token ecosystem, and they could also attract new users and developers to the network.

However, it is important to note that Runes are still in a very early stage of development. There is no guarantee that they will be successful, and there are also potential risks associated with using them.
