What's Buzzing Friends...
How do smoky quartz crystals and Chinese judges play into the modern fashion world of sunglasses? Read on and discover a brief history of sunglasses and this week's updates!
It is to note that the Inuit people used to wear ivory slatted bones over their eyes to help with their sun blindness, and there is a story about how emperor Nero rocked a pair of emerald glasses to watch the gladiator matches, however that cannot be substantiated.
Most historians say that sunglasses started to come into fashion with 12th-century judges in China. They would wear smoky quartz crystals over their eyes, not to protect them from the sun but to protect their facial expressions while they were questioning witnesses. Those are some cool judges indeed.
It wouldn't be until about 1929, on the Atlantic City Boardwalk when Sam Foster began selling the first mass-produced shades and the trend took off!
So, the next time you're rocking a pair of dark glasses, take a moment and say thanks to those Chinese judges and their smoky quartz crystals, then continue on your way looking cool.
