Bad times, good face

Bad times, good face

Bad times, good face..." It is a very well-known popular saying throughout Latin America, but in Cuba, it acquires a completely different dimension, almost of a philosophical or survival category. Among ourselves, squeezed by the circumstances and with a noose around our necks, we drop this proverb.

If there is something that precisely defines a Cuban, it is that inexhaustible capacity to make a joke out of their own misfortune.

1. Laughing When There's No Other Choice

While in other places a twenty-hour blackout, an endless line under the scorching sun, or the impossibility of buying basic necessities are legitimate reasons for despair, on the island they transform, almost immediately, into material for a meme, into the joke that runs from phone to phone, or into the quick quip thrown out on a neighborhood street corner. The joke acts as an invisible shield against frustration.

2. A Smile as an Act of Resistance

Many might think that laughing at problems is playing them down, but in the Cuban context, it is quite the opposite: it is a form of pure and hard resistance. It is refusing to let bitterness devour everything. Because in a country where so many things break down daily, humor is the only glue that holds the patience of its people together.

In the end, when the outlook turns black and the math doesn't add up, the Cuban always finds a way to make the gloom shine bright with a hearty laugh.

💡 A Piece of Advice for Difficult Times:

Never lose the ability to laugh at your own storms. When the burden feels too heavy and solutions seem out of reach, remember that laughter doesn't fix the problem instantly, but it hands the steering wheel of your mood right back to you. Lighten the weight of the backpack, disarm the overwhelm, and become the master of your own story.

After all, a people that knows how to laugh in the darkness is a people whose light can never be completely put out.
