I haven't viewed many international (I'm in the US) TV shows, not because I don't like foreign films/shows, some of my favorite films/shows are actually originally Spanish/Korean language works. This was my first viewing of a German language....anything and if you are looking to watch this for yourself, you would find it under Barbarians, and man is there some vicious people in this show.
Barbarians, or Barbaren for all my German peeps, is a war TV series by Netflix that is an account (fictionalized, not 100% real) of events during the Roman Empire's occupation of Germania, and the rebellion led by Arminius. The year is 9 AD. Yeah, single digit year, 9. But, tl;dr, Romans have occupied land for 20 years and Germanic tribes are fed up with it and form a resistance to upend the Romans. However, if you know anything about the Romans, they are pretty powerful. The Romans had one of, if not the best army at the time. Now, yes, these events are not touted as a complete retelling, but the events of Barbarians tell the story of the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest.
This tv series does a great job at a few things. The first is tugging at your heart strings. There's certain things I can't go into, (we're spoiler free here!), but there are certain scenes here that just get you. With war, comes death. With death, comes heartbreak. With heartbreak, comes revenge and that is the real premise of this series. Emotion is displayed very well in terms of the score of the show and the characters/acting. Laurence Rupp plays Arminius, who is a high ranking member of the Roman Imperial army, yet he's got some alterior motives up his sleeve, which you are alluded to in about episode 2 or 3 of Season 1.
The downside of this show, however, is the pacing. While most war films/shows are slow to start, essentially to lead to the big payoff which is, you know, the people dying. If you can go into this film knowing that, then I think you will really enjoy this show and, if you enjoy war films/shows or can't stop thinking about the Roman Empire (we all know who you are) then you may be bingeing this entire show all in one day. It has 2 seasons, 6 episodes each season, so it would be a quick, but enjoyable binge fest.
