In 2019, British author Holly Jackson wrote the novel, A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, which turned into a trilogy of novels and a prequel novel. The first novel was recently adapted to a TV show by BBC and was released in August of last year on Netflix and man is this show a trip to watch. You literally don't know where this show is going and that is what makes this, in my opinion, one of the best TV series to binge, especially since there is a 2nd season coming out soon!
Emma Myers (yup, 2nd review of a TV show starring her) plays the main character and makeshift detective who doesn't fully believe the story of how a schoolgirl died in her town. She doesn't believe it so much, that she was doing her EPQ, which in England and Wales, is taken by some students, kinda like an SAT test for students in the US. She's told by many people to drop this and not focus on this so much, but Pip, the name of Myers' character, does not let up and eventually gets to the bottom of what happened to this schoolgirl. The show goes through the typical "whodunnit" type of shows where they make you think it's one person, but then next episode it proven to not be them and so on and so on. I believe this show does this really well and the writers do a great job making you think certain ways, but the real clue/answer was right in front of your face the whole time.
Creator/Writer Poppy Cogan really knew how to tell this story and keep certain things hidden from the audience, yet still, at the end of the reveal, make the viewer ask themselves, "How did I miss that?". Poppy is a relatively newcomer to the entertainment industry. She wrote 1 episode for 2 other series in 2022. Those shows were "Chloe" and "Red Rose", which are both completely different feels from this show and I think Poppy has found something in the Mystery/Whodunnit genre.
This show is definitely worth the binge, especially now that season 2 is coming out soon. No release date, but it was renewed and that means it's coming soon, right? ....Right? I hope so. If any show deserves a 2nd season, it would be this one. Not only to continue the story, but because the feel of this show is different from other Mystery shows and it's a homey feeling where you almost feel like you live in this town too. Like it's your local mystery. Binge it now!!
