As Above, So Below is a found footage horror movie from back in 2014. I watched it when it first came out, however, I recently watched it again with a group of friends on Discord and it reminded me of how much potential this movie had and how the writers just threw it all away by forgetting that the most important part of a film....is the plot.
The scares in this film are on point. There's some freaky stuff that happens in this film that really get you, and not just cheap scares and loud sounds. No, some freaky freaky stuff. I believe the makers of the film expected to rely on those certain things in order for this movie to be received well by audiences. However, while those certain scenes were done well, the plot was lost about 20-30 minutes into the film. The film is supposed to be about a group of people who go deep into the French Catacombs in search of some "treasure". The main character, Scarlett, is essentially Lara Croft, just a lot more annoying. She peer pressures her friends and she always puts herself first. Not very good for a protagonist.
Keeping the plot in mind, as this group goes through the underground cavern, they all experience weirdly specific things that shouldn't be experienced. As I explained earlier, as well done as this freaky stuff and scares are, it's as if the writers expected these scares to carry the film and the audience to forget that there is a plot to this film, or at least should be a plot. It's not the worst found footage horror movie I've ever seen, however, this seems to be more like a filmed haunted house rather than a film. I'd recommend seeing this film if you like found footage movies AND don't care about plots and just want to be scared.
