NFT Domains are new web extensions (like .com or .info) launched as smart contracts on public blockchains.
What is Unstoppable Domains?
Unstoppable Domains is a software development company founded in San Francisco in 2018. It offers the user the opportunity to become the effective owner of a decentralized, and therefore non-censurable, NFT internet domain. The user who buys one of UD's domains, in fact, does not pay a "rent" to a provider as happens for classic domains, but has full ownership of it. The NFT domain is moved to the non custodial wallet of which the user has the probate keys with a transaction written on the Ethereum blockchain. Recently, in order to reduce fees, the Polygon network was also implemented, which allows you to claim a domain by paying a very low commission.
But which domains can you buy and how to get?
By creating a profile on Unstoppable Domains you can perform a quick search for a username of your choice, to which you can associate a domain of those proposed such as, for example, .bitcoin, .crypto, .wallet, .blockchain or .x. Prices range from $20 to over $1000 in some cases, but if you don't have big claims, you can get great deals for under a hundred dollars. Finally, once you have chosen your domain and checked its availability, you can proceed with the purchase by card, cryptocurrency or even PayPal.
Owning one of these domains has several use cases: first of all it allows you to receive payments in an easier and faster way, and secondly it is possible to build a website on it. As for payments, by connecting the domain to your wallet, to receive a payment simply enter your domain instead of the long address we know well, making it easier since it is faster to remember "yourname.crypto" instead of a long one character string.
Finally, once you have purchased the domain, you need to move it to your wallet to be the real owner. The "move" is actually a transaction on the Ethereum blockchain, but it can also be done on Polygon. To do this, simply set the Polygon network on the Metamask wallet (here is a quick guide: The METAMASK Tutorial) and then, from the "My Domains" section of the site, select "Claim".
The service offered by Unstoppable Domains is not only innovative, but also indispensable. Today, in fact, a classic domain can be censored or blacked out if someone does not like what is written on that site. NFT domains, on the other hand, are not censurable since they are written on the blockchain in an immutable way. Furthermore, being uniquely associated with our wallet, they constitute the first step towards building a unique digital identity.
