Donald Trump Has Destroyed The Republican Party

Let’s take a brief look at Republican presidents over the last half century. I’d like to start that far back just to set the stage for today. We start with Nixon. Very few would argue that he was a good president, but he did do some positive things while in office. The EPA, for instance, was formed under Nixon. I would even argue that he was a better president than Trump, but I would also argue that all U.S. Presidents were better than Trump. At least Nixon knew when it was over.

We then had Jimmy Carter, who is a great and honorable man and then we got Reagan. Now, I’m not here to bash Ronald Reagan, but to say he was a great President is overlooking a lot. We have the Iran Contra affair where at best he was oblivious to what was going on. In my opinion the worst thing he did was kick the debt can down the road. Since Reagan, each President has had to do the same, creating a bigger and bigger debt to be passed on to the next man or woman in office. This was, of course extended under Bush Sr. for another term. This formed the modern conservative party and greatly defined what the GOP now stood for which was reduced regulation on business, less taxes and fiscal responsibility. At least that was what they promised. Bush Sr. famously said, “Read my lips, no new taxes.” during his campaign and then raised taxes and still kicked the debt can down the road. In my opinion Reagan and Bush were largely patriotic still, viewing Democrats in the House and Senate as colleagues and not enemies. While “trickle down” economics failed, I do think they believed it would work and not just benefit rich people. Of course they made certain that it would benefit rich people and corporations, just assuming that would benefit the economy as a whole. The 1987 stock market crash should have been the end of that economic experiment, but it wasn’t.

1992 to 2000 was Bill Clinton and this is where we started to see the Republican party, like a previously sleeping dragon, raise it’s angry and vitriolic head. What today would seem minor, Republicans led by Ken Starr used an extramarital affair between two consenting adults to intimidate Clinton, and then during a deposition Clinton denied having sexual relations, which was a lie, and they used that lie, under oath, to impeach him. Regardless of that outcome, it did not warrant his removal, and a well functioning government was passed on to Bush Jr. in 2000.

And there we really have where Republicans went to the dark side. Today’s “never Trump” Republicans, like Steve Schmidt of The Lincoln Project, wont admit that, but it is true. The dirty tricks they pulled to win that election are well documented, and their position was clear. They were willing to disenfranchise voters in order to get the count they wanted. That is anti-democratic at its core. The Bush v. Gore decision was 5-4, split directly down party lines. It was apparent that the court appointments by previous Republican administrations had paid off. In my opinion this is the hill the Democrats should have been willing to die on. Count all the votes or we will secede from the Union. Whatever it takes. Apparently, Democrats weren’t yet ready to play hardball and Bush was appointed (not elected) President in 2001.

Bush Jr. was a horrible President. Only Trump has been worse, in my opinion. Not only was his way of attaining power anti-American, but the worst attack on our soil since Pearl Harbor happened on his watch. Then he lied to the American people to start a war, at the cost of thousands of U.S. lives, which made some of his rich friends even richer. I won a fantasy investment challenge in 2002 where I only made one move the entire year. I bought and held Halliburton stock. We should not look back on Bush now and think he was “one of the good ones”.

Furthermore, Bush inherited a good economy, one actually producing a surplus, from Clinton. His deregulation of the financial industry directly led to the mortgage crisis in 2008, nearly driving the economy right off a cliff. Obama gave us hope that things could change and again, Democrats rolled up their sleeves and not only saved the economy but passed the Affordable Healthcare Act (Obamacare). While I admit that the ACA has had its problems, it is vastly superior to what existed prior and has provided previously unaffordable healthcare to millions.

That brings us to Trump, and what we have seen in the last 4 years. A national nightmare. A President who lies with every breath. A President who only cares about himself. A President who views anyone who disagrees with him as an enemy. A man who was given hundreds of millions of dollars from his father and bankrupted every business he touched. A man who was recorded on tape advocating sexual assault. A man who was accused of raping a 13 year old girl. A man who gassed peaceful protesters for a photo op. A man who lied to the American people about a virus that would kill hundreds of thousands because he thought it was better for him politically. 7 of his advisers and his personal attorney were charged with various crimes from witness tampering to tax evasion and campaign finance violations. He demanded fabricated disinformation in return for money already allocated to the Ukraine. He failed to disavow white supremacism. Before he was President he wanted 5 young black men executed for a crime that was later proven they were not involved in. He has embraced and furthered conspiracy theories and online cults that believe Democrats are involved in a Satanic cult that eats young children.

One would assume that an obviously racist President with moral standards this low would be kept under the rug, so to speak, by the Republican party as a whole, but many of these men are cowards. Some, like Arizona Senator Jeff Flake, resigned and many were fired, if possible, and replaced with people Trump found loyal. Their hoods had come off and throughout the country we saw a rise in hate crimes as well as a rise in public demonstrations by openly racist, homophobic and antisemitic groups. Trump famously said that one Nazi group, The Proud Boys, should “stand back and stand by.” From Charlottesville to Kenosha to Columbia, people were murdered by Trump supporters that heard the dog whistles, these are not fellow Americans, they are the enemy. This is war.

Now, it isn’t fair to say that Democrats did nothing, in the face of all this, but it also isn’t fair to say they had any ability whatsoever to stop him. This is because Trump was protected by Republican Senators who blocked all attempts to have witnesses or documents admitted as evidence and they moved immediately to acquittal to end his impeachment. As I write this, yesterday representative Jim Jordan, who mostly led Senate Republicans in the impeachment hearings, was quoted, “When you have this many concerns, the American people have a right to know what happened.” regarding Trump’s phony claims of voter fraud. In an election Trump lost by over 5 million votes, the biggest margin ever. This after they rushed through a Supreme Court Justice who's main qualification was that she would side with Trump in case the election went to the Supreme Court like it did in 2000. Also, of course, they blocked Obama from appointing a judge in his last year. They have shown us all who they are. Massive hypocrites living in an alternate reality. They do not care about the will of the people. They don’t care about the Constitution. They don’t care about our republic having a free and fair democratic process. They don’t care about family values, or just being good, honest people. They are cowards and traitors who failed to uphold their oaths to the country. Well, Abraham Lincoln once said, “You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you can’t fool all the people all the time.”

The things I have said in this article are all true. How could you still defend Trump? Can’t you see what is going on? I haven’t seen tactics like this from adults, ever, in my life. A 5th grader knows how hypocritical it all is. If you have read this far, and you still don’t care and still support Trump, I applaud you for getting this far. This recent American history is important to understand. There’s just one thing. Don’t ever call yourself a patriotic American again, because you aren’t. The people have spoken. Trump lost. The country is moving on, and now that we all know who you really are, we will never allow this to happen again. Thanks, Trump!
