Bitcoin Cash (BCH) is a Bitcoin hard fork. The fork of a project is a copy of the source code from a software package to then develop an independent one. This creates a separate and distinct piece of software. Fork refers to a development branch and division in the developer community. A part of the Bitcoin team disagreed with some of the project's technical specifications, therefore leading to the launch of BCH on August 1, 2017.
All people who had Bitcoin at the launch also automatically owned the same amount of Bitcoin Cash. This strategy has been implemented to better advertise the new cryptocurrency. What really led to the birth of BCH is the scalability limit affected by BTC which is limited to 1 MB per block. Blocks larger than one megabyte are automatically rejected by the network because they are considered invalid. There are about 3 transactions per second of maximum possible capacity on the Blockchain. Thus, the one megabyte limit created a lot of traffic on the bitcoin network. This led to an increase in the cost of transaction fees and delays in transactions.
BCH developers wanted to speed up BTC transactions, still set at 1 MB. Furthermore, the creators of BCH did not accept that Bitcoin ended up having monopolies inside it (called mining pools) despite having been created to be decentralized. Bitcoin Cash is a cryptocurrency totally independent from that of the original Bitcoin. However Bitcoin is still the most important cryptocurrency in the world, and if its value increases or decreases, most digital coins follow the same trend.
