LimeWire was a well-known and popular peer2peer file-sharing website at the beginning of this century. It was shut down in the 2010s and now, LimeWire is coming back with an NFT marketplace focusing on art and music. This time LimeWire promises to give all artists full freedom over their produced content.
What Is LimeWire?
At the beginning of this month, LimeWire revealed its plans to launch an NFT marketplace that focuses on art and the music industry.
Back in the early years of this century, LimeWire was a popular file-haring website known for illegal downloads of music and movie files. In 2010 the website had been closed. While robbing the intellectual property of artists in the past, LimeWire plans to partner with artists and to give all of them full freedom over their intellectual properties. The NFT marketplace shall be, that's the plan, fully curated and is launching with well-known artist partnerships from the music industry.
While LimeWire was primarily used for downloading pirated songs in the past, it shall now focus on supporting artists and the whole industry. LimeWire wants to enable you to create, buy and trade NFTs with ease.
The naming rights for LimeWire had been acquired by the Zehetmayr brothers. The Zehetmayr brothers addressed the controversial past of LimeWire with the following statement:
“LimeWire is returning as a platform for artists, not against them. On LimeWire, the majority of the revenue will go directly to the artist, and we will be working with creators to allow full flexibility, ownership, and control when it comes to their content.”
LimeWire Partners
LimeWire has partnered with Algorand as their official blockchain provider. LimeWire will also build cross-chain bridges to Ethereum and Polygon and potentially others in the future as well.
Besides the CEOs of Algorand and wyre, Tareef Michael, the manager of the Wu-Tang Clan, has partnered with LimeWire.
LimeWire Timeline
The LimeWire NFT marketplace is expected to launch in May 2022, and an official NFT with a token reward system is planned for the end of this year.
