Do you remember a social media platform called Uptrennd? The website closed at the beginning of last year. As a result, the native token 1UP went to zero and lots of content creators lost access to their content.
Here comes, suitable for Halloween, a real content creator horror story.
Do You Remember Uptrennd?
Uptrennd was a social media platform that had its own native token 1UP. It was launched by a guy called Jeff Kirdeikis in late 2018. The rules on the platform were quite simple. You were not allowed to promote cryptocurrencies. The only one who was allowed to do that was big Jeff himself.
You could give likes on the platform and one like was equal to a 1UP token. Well, it was not as simple as that but you get the idea. It was promised that these earnings bring financial freedom but this has never been the case. Most users weren't even able to trade their tokens for two reasons. Withdrawals from the platform took an eternity and trading them on Uniswap cost a hell lot of Ethereum gas fees. If you wanted to trade $50 in 1UP tokens, you needed to pay a gas fee of $50.
Uptrennd- A Low-Quality Spam Fest
In the end, the concept of Uptrennd did not work out. The platform was taken over by bots and lots of low-quality content like "Good Morning" posts, random stock fotos, or simply plagiarism. I have seen it with my own eyes and it was truly unbelievable. Because of the bots, these low-quality posts got the most likes and earned the most 1UP token. It was a real disaster and they were not able to handle it.
At one point, Uptrennd announced that big changes will come. An app should come and Uptrennd would even enter DeFi which was the hottest topic at that time. The 1UP token made a big spike and then came the big change.
The Big Change - Shut Down!
Surprisingly for the users, the big change that came was the complete shutdown of the website and with it, there were all kinds of shady stuff going not only in the background. When the website shut down, the price of the 1UP token went straight to zero as it lost its only use case. As if this wouldn't have been bad enough, everyone who has ever created content on Uptrennd lost access to their works.
You have to imagine that there were content creators who were very engaged on this platform. From one day to another, all of their hard work from two years was completely lost. They were left with nothing, content gone, tokens gone.
Happy Halloween!
This was a real content creator horror story suitable for Halloween. The brief history of Uptrennd should be an eye-opener. It illustrates very well how important is to switch from traditional Web2 to Web3 social media platforms.
Also, just because a website or an app uses cryptocurrencies like Uptrennd doesn't mean that it is Web3. This requires that the whole content is stored on the blockchain. It is important to keep that in mind.
