Splinterlands is one of the oldest NFT games in the crypto space. It recently celebrated its eighth anniversary—a milestone reached while various other games are just entering the scene, others are shutting down, some are pivoting to Web2, and countless others have simply vanished...
To celebrate its 8th anniversary, the Splinterlands team launched a special event featuring two new promo cards. When combined, they become incredibly powerful thanks to the "Kindred Spirit" ability shared by both.
Looking at the art and the yin-yang concept behind the dragons Suiko and Tenrai, fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender will likely be reminded of Ran and Shaw—the two dragons that helped Zuko and the Avatar master true firebending.
The legendary dragon's name even echoes that of one of the show's characters; "Suiko" bears a resemblance to "Zuko," and the color scheme is reminiscent of the two dragons from Avatar. Of course, the art style differs significantly—the animated dragons lacked such intricate detail and were both Fire-elemental, whereas Suiko and Tenrai are Neutral. Come find out all the details about this event!

Splinterlands 8th Anniversary Event - Suiko & Tenrai
Put simply, the Splinterlands 8th Anniversary event focuses on two new promotional cards; the key distinction is that both possess the "Kindred Spirit" ability. I am not sure if there is currently an Archon capable of granting this ability to a unit during battle, but it would be an interesting mechanic, as it would allow the ability to be activated without necessarily needing two specific cards.
The first card is Suiko, the orange Legendary Dragon. Currently, not a single unit of Suiko can be found for sale on the marketplace; therefore, interested players can only obtain it via the event page by navigating to Shop > 8 Year Anniversary.
The price for a single copy (1 BCX) is $8.88—quite high for a Level 1 card—yet 983 purchases have already been made due to its rarity. Even at Level 1, Suiko boasts 2 magic damage and the Kindred Spirit ability, which grants "Armored Strike" to adjacent units that also possess Kindred Spirit.
The next card is Tenrai; unlike Suiko, it only gains the Kindred Spirit ability at Level 2, which requires combining 4 copies. At this level, it has 2 magic damage, 4 HP, 2 shield, and 3 speed, retaining the "Opportunity" ability from level 1. Tenrai's "Kindred" ability is "Giant Killer" against adjacent units. The interesting part is the "Bulwark" ability it gains at level 5.
Unlike Suiko, Tenrai can already be found on the marketplace—albeit at a price slightly higher than the event cost—which shows that people are buying it (4,839 units) rather than dumping it onto the market. During the event, it costs $0.88, but since the "Kindred" ability is unlocked at level 2, the total cost would be $3.52.
Regarding the Splinterlands dragons, it is interesting to note that while Suiko unleashes an attack resembling fire, Tenrai fires a blast of thunder. Another interesting detail is that, if you look closely, both dragons have a saddle-like feature on their backs, as if another unit were meant to combine with them.
The concept of having two monsters with saddles could be leveraged for a new promo card—perhaps a dragon rider or an "elemental controller" akin to an Avatar. I think it would be interesting to have, say, two slightly more expensive cards and one extremely cheap one, ensuring access for all players.
Perhaps even an airdrop—distributing the card for free or for a nominal fee—could celebrate the eighth anniversary on a grand scale, encouraging everyone to post about it. Splinterlands is one of the few crypto games with a truly engaged community, yet I feel they haven't fully capitalized on this major asset. There used to be events that served as a guide for the community to discuss specific topics, but those ended, and since then, it feels like everyone has been a bit aimless. They could bring back thematic community events whenever major news breaks.
